what would you recommend for a hopelessly undergeared level 80 paladin -- prot or ret for solo questing?

my prot gear is ilevel ~200-232 heroic blues/epics and my ret gear is questing greens/heroic blues. neither is good enough to queue up for BRC and Cat BoE's on the AH are either bad (eg: plate "of the whale") or way more than my broke ass can afford.

the infinite loading screen is temporarily solved. seems something that changed since cata release cause a conflict with ZA. Kill ZA and no loading bar probelm.

i thought so too but i just made sure the "track objectives" in the lower right is checked. I dont know if you're using a map addon. But that was my problem for half a day. I wondered why it was working on some toons but not others.

using sexy map, but even with it disabled when i click "track minerals" it deselects instantly...it works on al my other characters

edit: with all my addons disabled it work, but i cant find out which one it is.

I played WoW for a little less than a month, at least a year or two ago, and am thinking about getting back into it. I got an Orc Hunter to lvl ~20, and he was fairly easy to solo, though I think it was a tad boring for me. What is the best solo class/race combo (without any twinking as this is a blank account) currently? And is this combo somewhat viable for PvP as well as PvM? Thanks!

I say prot only because i'm going prot too. The respawn on kills are insane and prot will do very well for you.

I leveled my paladin from 60-80 as prot and was thinking of doing the same this time, but thought I'd try ret instead for a change, and I've been liking it so far (82)

My paladin started with a T9-level holy/prot gear but just barely ilvl-200 ret gear. It wasn't a big problem at all. Early on it's a little slow, but soon enough I'm picking a lot of plates dps gear from quest reward and by the time I finished Hyjal I've replaced everything except for one trinket at '274 equipped' as shown at the new armory.

yes, i did something similar i did the first 5 quests in the zone to get the underwater breathing dealie and then flew over there and swam down

The only problem with this is that Earthen Ring sells the... I think tanking helm enchant. So if you have a tanking character, you'll need to do up to the place with the Quartermaster on at least one character. Helm enchants are still BoA, but oddly... shoulder enchants are not.

I thought it was also kind of odd that it requires doing all of Deepholm to unlock the Therazane dailies, which is very unlike how it was to unlock Sons of Hodir.

It sounds like your prot gear will be better initially, but do remember that you get gear very quickly when you start off. I think the third or fourth quest in Mount Hyjal actually gives you a 2H DPS sword! If you plan on doing dungeons, you'll have to take into account that tanks get instant queues and DPS well... do not. I actually prefer queuing as DPS while leveling, because you can just keep on going for 10-15 minutes while you're queued.

Although, I guess it's not so bad on either, but I think of the instant queues as not as leveling friendly.

Almost any class can do well in PVE, but of course, there are some that will do exceptionally well. If you ignore silly things like kiting, the strongest solo leveling class is probably the Paladin. In later levels, their ability to heal themselves is pretty crazy. But pretty much any class is capable of soloing things.

seems like I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't.

I'm not seeing many prot quest rewards and I don't meet the ilevel requirements to tank them, but if I go dps, I'm looking at hour-long queues.

something like the hardened obsidian set or whatever would be best, but it's selling for like 500g/piece in my server's AH right now.

I'm leveling up casually this time around.

when WotLK came out, I was bunkered down in my apartment with a freezer full of hotpockets and a fridge full of mountain dew and I hit 80 in like 3-4 days (didn't leave my apartment, though I did sleep and shower).

it totally burned me out, though, and I wasn't able to bring myself to level another character through wrath for like 6 months afterward.
*cough*

😛

85 on my druid. Im burned out. I dont feel like leveling on my pally and my DK.

how long? i was leveling 1 of my 4 80s then i realized that i'm not even in a raiding guild and i'm probably doing the heroic dungeon grind for gear and JP. So i decided to level all my toons at one time, just rotating through each of them every few days, so i can let rest XP build up. The only downside is doing the same zone/quests 4 times. ahahha, at least i read through the quests the first time and the other 3 i just grab and go.

Estimating an hour of just doing nothing in orgrimmar, 84-85 was about 3:30 hours. That was the longest. All of the other ones were about 2ish or more hours per level. 80-81 was about an hour.

Most people's estimates were about right. 9-12 hours from 80-85

I'm midway through Uldum right now and while I like the aesthetics of the zone, I'm finding myself a little more bored with it overall compared to Mount Hyjal and Deepholm. It also seems to be dragging along immensely.

I will say one thing I like about Cata over WotLK though, the vehicle sequences are much more well done. They're more fun and not frustrating.

hour long queue = waiting for a group? [not sure if they changed something in cata].

Back when I was actively playing a few years ago - I tried PROT spec for soloing and it was painfully slow. Ret [with quest or badge reward gear] dps was insane back then for soloing - especially vs anything that's "undead".

not sure if it was for everyone on my realm or just a select few, but seems i had the hyjal port doesn't appear till you get the highlands one.

Ret Pally in WoTLK was insane.

What are you guys using for buffs and debuffs? I dont like EBB and the long vertical listings. Default is ok but i prefer to see all buffs.

default + uncheck "consolidate buffs" under Options -> Interface -> Buffs and Debuffs

I've never really found a buff addon that I liked more than the default.

yup. on my dps characters, the looking for group waiting times have been averaging 45-60 minutes... on a tank, it's pretty much instant queues.

on a side-note, after solo questing with my prot pally tonight, it feels insanely easy after playing my priest. I'm rounding up 2-3 mobs whenever I'm able just because it's just I can, and still ending every fight at 100% hp/mana.

might just be you guys i had Hyjal and vashir long before setting foot in highlands or deepholm

I've had the Hyjal portal issue on both my mage and DK. It's there now on my mage who has the Cataclysm Loremaster achievement. I don't know when it showed up, but it was at least after I had done Vash'jir, Hyjal, and Deepholm. My DK just finished up Hyjal and still doesn't have the portal. No problems with any of the other portals, though.
