what you typed is how i believe the system is actually calculating the average speed.
Which is, technically, the correct way of doing it: total distance divided by total time.

I'm not sure about mobile apps, but websites such as Garmin Connect and desktop programs like SportTracks will display both average speed and average moving speed. I think SportTracks also lets you specify a threshold speed, below which it considers you to be stopped.

Well it appears the avg speed is calculating the avg including the time i spend stopped (ie all the dips below 10mph appear to be from slowing/stopping) which I don't think accurately reflects my avg speed.

what you typed is how i believe the system is actually calculating the average speed.

Check to see if the app has an auto pause if you're worried about it. iMapMyRide+ has this feature and I have it turned on.

Also, I'll start posting my mileage. Bought a new set of Michilen City tires to replace the crappy OEMs that came with my new hybrid and put 10 miles on them last night.

1. Well I did the run with stops turned off today. At least now I feel a little better about myself.

2. So I was sitting here with my bike behind me and all of a sudden I heard a hissing sound. Yep, front tire deflated. WTF happened? I did my ride completely safe and the while sitting here it decided to deflate itself?

Might be the valve having decided it had enough. Possibly a thermal effect. Either the valve cooling or the air in the tube increasing pressure.
Or something else entirely!

Did another 10 mile ride tonight around the neighborhood. My new pump with a better guage came from Amazon so I finally got a true reading of my tire pressures and got it to 70 PSI, was good for another .5 to 1 mph avg.

26 miles today, including a medium-paced ride after work with a co-worker. It's still nice and warm outside, around 85F when I got home around sundown.

Having completed all my "definite" riding goals for the year, the last one being the Midnight Century, now I'm slacking off a bit, but I do want to maintain a reasonable fitness base as we head toward fall and winter.

Total: 17274 (adding my 26 and Lotheron's 10 to the last known total)

66 hilly miles today. Felt pretty rough since I've basically taken the past 2 weeks off. With 2 weeks to go until my 200K ride, I've got some work to do. I've got a really good base of miles to draw on this year, so I should be able to ride myself back into shape pretty quickly.

Went through a section Salado Creek greenway (bike path in San Antonio) that they're building, 14 miles. I'm liking it, gonna have to go back again often!

51 miles yesterday. Really enjoying the cooler weather in the mornings. Was pretty wiped out from the previous day's ride, but felt much better as the ride went on.

Tried to go back to the greenway but overnight rains flooded it out and since I haven't gone but once, I'm unfamiliar with these things.

Oh well did 11 miles throughout the neighborhood.

I miss riding in Columbus. My fondest memories were riding in the fall, listening to Buckeye games on 97.1 throughout my neighborhood.

6 miles yesterday, taking the bike home and leaving the car at work.
Ran over a nail around half a mile from home. It disappeared completely in the tire.
Luckily I had a tube on me to swap it, as well as a bit of old tire, to patch up the hole, and the small pump.
Just ordered almost 100 dollars worth of tires and tubes on Amazon, to replace and have spares around.
Just got that tire 2 months ago. Second destroyed tire in 12 months of riding, and another two which were mildly pierced (markings on the inside, but didn't go through the tube) to the point where I replaced them recently. Had I known that Tires and tubes would rack up such costs...

Anyway, swapped back to one of the less broken tires this morning and did another 6 to get to work. Almost ran into the back of a van, that didn't get going at the lights, while fishing for the pedal.

Total: 17455mi and 70 euro ;)

Got my tube replaced, so +3 yesterday. Also added my second pannier, so the bike feels heavy as shit now. My accelerate like crap, but hopefully my legs will get bigger.

36 miles this gorgeous morning. Over 1,000 feet vertical. Hit 44 MPH on a descent, per my Garmin watch. I can't believe this is North Carolina in late August. It was in the high 60's, low 70's. Usually it's hot as heck.
