Asus X1800XT TOP review at FS

Here:
linkhttp://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/asus_extreme_x1800_xt_top/

It does pretty well against the GTX 512, only losing in the OGL title.

hope it's not a repost.

Those benchmarks show the reg x1800 XT beating the 512 in benchmarks that no other site does. I'm calling at least partial BS.

concentrate on the diff b/w the two 1800xts then, they can't be making that up (not easily at least)...

Just a thought but most of the 512 GTX reviews were done before the newest performance enhancing drivers (hehe, sounds illegal) were put out. I mean performance enhancing for both nV and ATI. For example the Anandtech review of the 512 was done in mid-November and that was one of the later ones.

Some other site should do a review using the latest drivers and then we can see if the Firing Squad review was not correct.

dug i think you underestimate the reviewers at FS who have reviewed so many gfx cards that they probably could make it up easily. I doubt they did but just saying they could if they wanted.

Looks to be inline with what X-bit labs got in their review. X1800XT much closer to the 512MB 7800GTX than the 256MB GTX. I wish they had a price listed with the review. Probably cost you an arm (vs. an arm and a leg for the 512MB 7800GTX). 😀

I would also say that if I bought a 512 GTX.

nonsense . . . this is the OC'd x1800xt . . . FS has a decent reputation and they are not ATi 'fanboys'.

After seeing so many reference designs come from ATI?s board partners, it?s refreshing to see someone think outside the box and come up with something completely new and exciting. That?s exactly what we feel ASUS has done with their Extreme X1800 XT TOP.

The board is clocked at 700MHz on the graphics core, making it the fastest Radeon X1800 XT graphics card on the planet and fulfilling the vision ATI?s engineers had intended for the X1800 XT GPU when it was originally designed. ASUS then clocks the board?s memory at 800MHz, 50MHz over the stock speed of the X1800 XT, providing a performance boost to the card at high resolutions with AA/AF. These changes net the board an extra 10% in performance.

in FS' opinion, ASUS' card's only perceived 'weakness' is its lack of further o/c'ing tools.

Now lets see what the x1900xtOC can do.
😀

is the ASUS card the one that needs external power?

I believe the card runs even without connecting the external power.

The external power supply is only needed if your PSU is too weak. If your PSU has a PCIe 6pin power plug, you can use that or the molex adaptor that comes with the card for it. I think that is actually a good idea by Asus.

I don't own one and I call BS also. But I only trust AT reviews anyways.

I love Anandtech and all but you need to get out and read some other reviewers too. It's good to be well-rounded. That doesn't mean you have to believe everything you read, but there are a lot of good review sites out there that are worth taking a look at.

The x1800xt is maturing well as newer drivers are coming out. A $500 card mass quantity card is beating the $750 press card in 3 out of the 6 most popular games out right now. Also, you can use 6xAA instead of a 4xAA on the x1800xt cards with minimal performance hit. Someone should do a review and add that little column to demonstrate.

I'm glad I saved $250 and got the x1800xt instead of the 7800GTX512 because it does perform better in the games that I play.

Hmm, the GTX wins in HL2, Quake4, IL2 while the XT wins in F.E.A.R (by like 2 fps), bF2 and CoD2.

But, this isnt another SKU is it?

7800GTX 512mb OC vs X1800XT OC anyone? 😀
Fast card. But might get obsolete within few days due to the upcoming R580/G71.

I have no clue honestly why someone would buy one of these "OC" cards when the regular x1800xt can be bios flashed to these speeds without any issues.

True, unless you want it for the better bundle, cooling system (the one used on ASUS is supoposedly silent) extrenal power supply for more OCing power?

I'm still wondering how the 7800GTX 512 gets beat with all this raw power, so to speak. With it's faster RAM, high clock speed and 8 more pipes, it should wipe the floor with the x1800xt in all areas but that isn't the case, esp. with AA/AF turned up.

I'm glad I got a 6800gt for only $180. 3 times less cash for 2 times less performance.

As a matter of fact, my brother got a 9800 pro for $65. ZOMG only 4 times less performance for 8-10 times less cash!

You know what, my friend GAVE me a geforce4 mx440 for free! 100 times less performance, but infinity times less cash!

If by maxed out you mean 4AA/16AF than you're right. If you just mean max in-game detail settings than I'll bet a 512MB 7800GTX or X1800XT would do the trick at 1280x1024.

Maybe because some of us would rather spend a few extra bucks to get the few extra frames than risk hundreds of dollars OCing parts?

Honestly, I could not see someone spending an extra 250$ for 3-10 extra frames especially when your getting over 60 fps, you wouldn't even know the difference. Unless your a complete tool, and are a hardware snob.

Edit: Also its almost impossibly hard to find a 512gtx, its only preorder or ebay.
