The reason I ask is because I referred to a friend of mine as oriental and the caucasian guy I was talking to fussed at me for not saying Asian. :\

Personally, I think it's stupid that we don't still use the word oriental to describe people. It's not a racial slur or anything, it's just not used because it is Euro-centric. We still use oriental to describe food, rugs, anything else coming from that area. Screw it. Oriental is more specific than Asian. Asian is ambiguous. If oriental bothers people, they can get over it.

because somebody has to....

Oriental refers to some type of property - an oriental rug, the orient express, whatever

You use Asian when you refer to a person from Asia (duh what the fvck)

Some people find being called oriental offensive; I'll correct somebody for saying it, but I don't find it offensive.

What the **** are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

This is the first time I have heard of Oriental as referring to property.

Guy2:

That doesn't really work too well.

I'm ok with either one as long as you don't sing "Ching Chong Chinaman hanging on the Tree, Swung too hard and now he's dead hanging on the Tree, " like this one white girl did while I was waiting for someone outside of a KMart.

I want to be assigned a color like black and white people. You can go ahead and call me Mr. Yellow.

I have only been referred to as an oriental once in my entire life. That was in Michigan. Also the same state where some 8 years old white girl sang the Ching Chong Chinaman song in front of my face while the parents laughed.

Asian is the PC term now a days. Something about Oriental refering to a direction and Asian refering to a location. They're really semantic differences but the connotations are there nontheless

False.

It's strictly a US "political correctness" thing. In other countries they call themselves oriental.

Yeah, that'll work great.

Why use descriptive terms at all? Just make hand gestures.
