Indians account for .6% of the general population in the U.S., but account for over 10% of all the doctors in this country.

You might see a lot of Indians practicing medicine out in the suburbs, but most of them got their green cards by working for underserved urban and rural hospitals for a number of years, under the J1 visa waiver program (or at least, that's been the rule for the past 10-15 years).

That's how we immigrated here. Cheers.

When i grew up if you werent a doctor, lawyer, or engineer you made you family loose face, im just lucky i liked computers. I'm not a good indian son though, i only have my Bacheolers of Science, i need to get a masters and preferablly a Ph.D

All the people in my family were expected to got college and it never even occured to me that i might not.

its a lot about the work ethic they have. and inresponse to red dawn's comments about the Sihks that run convience stores, they might be running them but i gaurantee you that their kids wont.

u sure abt that statistic? 34% , one out of every three...cannot be true...

most of my uncles have their own private practices, One of them owned an HMO and sold it for quite a lot of money.

as for the software, i hate to say it but its all the white people who bring down the quality of the code (they should just stick to marketing and HR where there work can be appreciated) 😛 😉

I wonder if that figure of Asian Indians making 90k/year is based on personal gross earnings or household income. According to the US Census, Asians have the highest household incomes out of just about every racial group. This does not necessarily mean that all Asians are rich. Many people who are not asian fail to realize that alot of asians, especially those that have immigrated in the past 15 or so years live in large family groups. 90k a year may seem like a whole lot, but its not that much if there are 5 fulltime wage-earners in the household.

It's a shame all these Hot Shot Hindu Doctors and Engineers feel the need to abandon their homeland for riches abroad and leave India mired in third world poverty and her population dealing with rampant disease, a high infant mortality rate and starvation. Of course most of them are untouchables and really can't be bothered with by the Upper Castes.

Well I don't really Blame them. I'd move the hell out of there as soon as I could if I were them to. Their loss is our gain.

The family bond is VERY strong in Indians (well, the Punjabi ones anyways 🙂)

I've heard that time and time again. Wouldn't their expertise be more of a benefit to the population as a whole instead of the money sent just to their immediate families?

Of course, but as you are probably aware, corruption is rampant in India. As a matter of fact, there is nothing you can do there without needing to bribe someone. Want to get in a good college? Grades mean nothing, must bribe the admission officer. Want a good job? Can't get in without $$$. Education means absolutely nothing there.

How would they use their expertise, and I'm talking about the computer programmers who work in my office, really be as effective as the $30k or so they probably send home each year?
Besides, capitalism is about you first and everyone else later.

#1 Thier is no border for them to run over to get to the US so only the best/brightest and most motivated get to come to the US after quite a lot of work. It's kind of like only picking Harvard graduates fromt he US and listing thier income level.

#2 They are obsessed with money and success as well as education and the future of thier children more so than most Americans

#3 They work thier asses off often to the detriment of thier social lives etc. to be successfull

#4 Even non technical Asian Indian graduates tend to do very well due to working hard and not making waves. My dad who iis a PHD in a social science breaks that 90k barrier

#5 I'm not saying this is all good or bad, but it is easily explainable when you look at what motivates them and how they work

#6 Or you could just use the explanation bandied about by some on this board in the past and say that they are smarter than everyone else 🙂

Exactamundo,

Also the graduate students comming over here from thier big 15 univerities are an order of magnitude better trained than our graduates. Those schools are hard and hard as hell to get into. And millions apply for tousands of slots for university.

Hey Ameesh, you wouldn't happen to know Melur Raghuraman would you?

nope sorry, do you know Jane from canada?
LOL...wasn't as random as it seemed. Going under the assumption you worked at MS, and given your statement I wondered if you might have known him - he's a south indian at MS, I believe he was in some way heading up the win 2k development.

a majority of those people have been with microsoft a very long time, most likely before Microsoft was hiring a lot of immagrants, Jawad Khaki is my boss, I believe he is from Pakistan or India, i'm not sure exactly but a lot of indian people are developers in the windows division. Jawad's organization has a lot of indian people in it.

I've only met one person from India, that was in college. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that he's rich. Very cool, very nice, very hard working.

I know you can't judge an entire culture on one person, but 100% of the Indian's I've met have kicked butt 🙂
