Asian Indians

I heard through hersay that Asian Indians Immigrants that have lived in America at least ten (maybe fifteen) years make on Average 90K/year.

Do all of them come over here pre-med or something? Because I think that is a crazy number, assuming its true. So, whats their secret?

There are no Indians in pro-sports (that I know of) and Indians in hollywood are relegated to minor roles, so that number is not skewed by millionaire entertainers.

i would say they are more of compsci and compengineer instead of premed. more than 50% of the students in my cs classes are indian and they are good at it.

They save lots of money by going on starvation protests... 😛

/me puts on flame-retardant suit.

i think the ones coming over already have degrees and come over with working sponsors or something like that...

Its not that they are smarter, its that their work ethic is awesome. They push themselves because they have to. They know they are the underdogs, and work that much harder at whatever it is they choose. Also, I'm friends with many Asian Indians, and I talk to their parents a lot. It seems that money is a huge motivation for some of them. Education is another, and they seem to go hand in hand. So really, im not surprised at all by the 90K + thing.

#1 Thier is no border for them to run over to get to the US so only the best/brightest and most motivated get to come to the US after quite a lot of work. It's kind of like only picking Harvard graduates fromt he US and listing thier income level.

#2 They are obsessed with money and success as well as education and the future of thier children more so than most Americans

#3 They work thier asses off often to the detriment of thier social lives etc. to be successfull

#4 Even non technical Asian Indian graduates tend to do very well due to working hard and not making waves. My dad who iis a PHD in a social science breaks that 90k barrier

#5 I'm not saying this is all good or bad, but it is easily explainable when you look at what motivates them and how they work

#6 Or you could just use the explanation bandied about by some on this board in the past and say that they are smarter than everyone else 🙂

Not only medical, but pharmacy and all the above. My dad is a pharmacist and so are a lot of his friends.

I was in a multicultural club at my high school and one of our activities was to list stereotypes of different groups. A black guy said a stereotype of Indians is that they're cheap. An Indian immediately blurted out, "yeah, but we're rich." Haha...the whole class thought that was so amusing. 🙂

No doubt they have a strong work ethic and many are wealthy, but I still think $90K average is awfully high.
Around here, many work in gas stations and convenience stores so I doubt they are making anywhere near that much. True they may not have been here for the requisite time you mention, but I would also doubt that they are Doctors, Pharmacists, or PHDs.

That number probably won't be valid in current economy. More and more companies are sending work to India instead of calling them here and paying insane amount of money. Average salary for engineers has drastically fallen over past two years so new comers won't make that much. Nonetheless the avg. income of Indian Asian family will remain high due to their work ethics and lifestyle(not spending whole paycheck on friday night).

Some of the smartest, hardest working guys I know are Indian. Come to think of it, I'm sure some of these cabbies I ride with in NYC have more advanced degrees than me.

I've actually read that the average income is closer to either $70k or $80k.

I think that they usually own the gas stations that they work at. Don't those usually earn a lot of money?

The average Indian family tells their children that the only thing they can be is either an engineer or a doctor 🙂

The figure was for Indians who have been here 10+ years. I have no trouble believing this. Many Indians start out as you said, working in convenience stores, etc. but the work ethic and values are such that within a few years they will own the convenience store, then a chain of them, etc. And others come with advanced degrees and go straight into professional fields.

I think Anand's helping to skew that figure.
Anand is an American, not an Indian or a Pakistani!!!

Also, I think that figure is pure bullsh!t. Conveniance stores own by Sihk Indians are usually run by members of their family and most of them do not even come close to making $90 K a year.

Eh, he looks brown to me. j/k.

Actually, I was born in America, parents are West Indian, but I'll still check off "Indian" on occasion on a survey that asks ethnicity.

Besides, it just seemed like the appropriate quick-wit joke to make, albeit not entirely accurate.

34% of the people who work for microsoft are indian (a lot of south indians)

When i grew up if you werent a doctor, lawyer, or engineer you made you family loose face, im just lucky i liked computers. I'm not a good indian son though, i only have my Bacheolers of Science, i need to get a masters and preferablly a Ph.D

All the people in my family were expected to got college and it never even occured to me that i might not.

its a lot about the work ethic they have. and inresponse to red dawn's comments about the Sihks that run convience stores, they might be running them but i gaurantee you that their kids wont.

they might be running them but i gaurantee you that their kids wont.
Unless they become Americanized and get fat and lazy🙂

BTW, there's nothing wrong with running Convevience stores.

i dont think there is anything wrong with doing any kind of honest work, better then not working and leeching off society imo.

Well the Indians you see running convenient stores and gas stations are all SIKHS. I think the statement should regard to all Hindu-Indians and not SIKHS, because they are really two different groups of people.

Now, not all of them are Sikhs. I've known of some that are Gujratis.

In my immediate project group, 50% of my co-workers are Indian. It's a design technology group btw.

I am half Asian Indian. I don't have the Indian component. ;]
