District 9 was in a total different class for me.

Ahhhh, District 9 was so much fun!

Have you seen Troll Hunter? It's not sci-fi, but it's along the same lines of just a fun movie that wasn't shot in a big studio.

Cool, I'm ready for a good scifi film.
Europa Report and Moon were good, but otherwise, nobody other than Tarkovsky has come close to touching Kubrik.

My friend saw Arrival at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last month and he says it's totally awesome. And apparently those in the audience with him also think so too. It has finally hit 40 reviews over at Rotten Tomatoes, and it's 100% positive. This is the first time I've seen this happen for a movie like this, a big budget Hollywood sci-fi flick (albeit filmed in Montréal). In addition, at Metacritic it has a solid 80% after 16 reviews, which also bodes well.
Now at 45/45.

We'll see if it gets to that nice round number of 50/50.

Stargate was also a different spin on things. I loved the TV series (SG-1 > everything although Universe started to have promise at the end). I'm really curious about the reboot.

teh google said:
...Roland Emmerich's 1994 film Stargate was originally designed as a trilogy, but MGM decided to launch three TV companion series. Now that screenwriter Dean Devlin is in active development with Emmerich on a movie reboot, he says they have to start over from scratch in order to fulfill the original vision. ...

gods fucking damn it.

The first Stargate movie was great. I'm not optimistic about a reboot, if Independence Day 2's reviews are any indication.

It's fall, time for a well received hard Sci-fi movie. Observe:

Fall of
2013 Gravity - 7.8 IMDB 96 Meta 96 RT
2014 Interstellar - 8.6 IMDB 74 Meta 71 RT
2015 The Martian - 8.0 IMDB 80 Meta 92 RT
2016 The Arrival....

We should be happy that Hollywood has realized they can put out at least one brainy, non sequal, Sci-fi movie a year that makes money and receives nominations.

Was it really though? I think this is a very clear example where the TV show was better than the movie.

I really liked Stargate the movie. And I don't think the show was necessarily better than the movie. Sometimes it was better but overall it was mainly just different, mostly more lighthearted, but with often crappier acting, and there were also some really cheesy episodes.

Stargate is a movie I have purchased in multiple formats. The recent Blu-ray version is pretty decent.

Just saw this. One of the best movies I've seen all year.

Saw the first show of the day at noon. Had to kill some time at the hotel before my flight back from New Orleans, and luckily the hotel was in a complex that had a theatre. Crappy theatre but nonetheless the movie was excellent so I really enjoyed my two hours there.

Currently 94% at Rotten Tomatoes and 82% at Metacritic. I'd agree with that. At least a 4/5. Maybe even a 4.5 / 5.

However, it is not a summer blockbuster. More of a brooding yet tender sci-fi thinker.

I see you've missed that Interstellar 2: Intrastellar has started production.

It would be even nicer if they stretched the envelope a little and tried to do two decent movies a year.

The main thing that bothered me was why she was
seeing the future before she met the aliens.

I suppose after meeting them it would influence her but before I don't get.

Newbian that's a pretty massive spoiler. Could you hide that in a spoiler tag?

The movie only came out today so most people wouldn't have seen it yet.

It's good. Saw this in September at TIFF with my wife and she also liked it. It's not Interstellar good imo, but my wife also didn't like Interstellar, so even if you are not big on sci-fi you may like it.

The is no spoiler button anymore so unless there is bbcode somewhere with it this seems more work then necessary as the movie did come out today so people should really stay away from the thread. ;)

*edit* Otherwise I found where they hid the button for it under insert so I guess I could use it but it will cost you.

I thought this was way better than Interstellar.

Thanks man. :)

Edit:

Turns out this movie isn't really big budget after all. According to Box Office Mojo, it only cost $47 million to make. That's a lot more than the $30 million for District 9 though.
