I liked Sicario myself, and have been had a mini crush on Amy Adams awhile now.

Have been waiting on Arrival to come out myself.

Rotten Tomato scores aren't all that relevant anymore. It has been misused, abused, and gamed by studios for several years now.

Please explain.

Hollywood has been increasingly focused on aggregate review scores. They even use them to promote a movie. Unfortunately, it has become a major factor for many people in determining whether they will see a movie or not. People behind the movie studios aren't stupid. They know when they have a potential stinker on their hands. They have people that will engage reviewers they feel will give favorable reviews. They will allow these people to view these movies before release. Rotten Tomatoes also skews the aggregate review scores further by preferring "top critic" reviews. Ever wonder why a movie scores higher before release and then falls sharply afterwards?

I'm not saying this movie is going to be a stinker. All I'm saying is that aggregate reviews aren't as reliable as they seem to be on the surface.

Except most of these reviews appear to be from film festival attendees.

For example, at TIFF, technically anyone can go see these movies if you can get a ticket. My friend who went is just a regular guy not in the movie industry nor is he a reviewer. He just wanted to see it and had the time to get the tickets and take time off and watch it. Think of getting a TIFF ticket to a major release like getting up at 3 am on pre-order day for that iPhone 7 Plus. Some of us will get that phone on launch day but some won't.

These are not studio hosted events with all handpicked audience members.

BTW, for stinkers, they often don't preview them and sometimes don't allow reviews until launch weekend.

And I'll say again, 100% after 40 reviews basically never happens with a big budget Hollywood sci-if flick, regardless of the situation.

Exactly why I don't care about first reviews on rotten tomatoes. They are always reviews from fans of the genre or hyped about the movie.

A better description is that people who see these movies at film festivals are fans of cinema, and not necessarily particular genre fans. And my friend who saw it isn't a movie reviewer so obviously he wouldn't have an RT review entry.

In fact, it's probably more representative at RT since they need to have some credentials, whereas at IMDB you can vote on a score without even having seen the movie.

i just wait to see what siskel and ebert say about a movie before i decide to watch it
I must admit I chuckled at your morbid humour.

The reviewers who have seen the movies, saw them at festivals. Toronto has press screenings and I assume all the other festivals do too

I agree that early reviews don't mean much but once you hit 40 reviewers it gets a bit more accurate. Arrival will drop a bit but it will still get a very solid score. Whether or not you pay any attention to RT is another question

I might actually go to the theater for this. Trailer looks good. Not a fan of Forest, but sometimes you just have to live with it.

Careful.

The trailer for District 9 was awesome and the critics gave overwhelming praise. It turned out to be complete garbage.

I also liked District 9... but I also think Armageddon is great fun, so maybe my opinion doesn't mean much here. I'm excited by Arrival, it's got the sci-fi/space/alien aura that I love but is also seemingly pretty different.

I didn't hate Armageddon, but didn't love it either. Worth the time wasted, but ultimately forgettable, and kinda stupid.

District 9 was in a total different class for me. Thus, I was excited when Elysium came out. Unfortunately, Elysium was pretty mediocre, partially because the dialogue was not very good. I cringed when I heard some of Jodie Foster's lines. And Chappie was even worse.

It turns out much of District 9 was ad-libbed by Sharlto Copley.
