Okay, I've decided I'm going to do this as well. As soon as I save up some cash I'm getting my plane ticket. I've always wanted to just go off and explore for a year or two, but now I have some inspiration.

How did you do it on 20k though? That doesn't seem like much money to travel the world like you did for a year.

Outside of Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, things are incredibly cheap. Lodging ranged anywhere from $5-10 a night, you could feed yourself for another $5-10. I spent $20k in a year, and if I wanted to make that money last another six months, I could've. Easily.

A sugar momma helps too ;)

I don't recall seeing an Asian dude in Luxor, but I was another asian dude. I stayed in Nefertiti Hotel by the way, right beside this street with this restaurant that has "recommended by Rough Guide" right on the signboard :D

honestly, you dont have to do a lot of planning. you get your immunization shots, you take care of your apartment lease if you have one, put travel notices on your credit cards, buy your tickets, and go. in most places, there will be a well beaten itinerary that thousands before you have taken, just go with the flow!

I would've spent less time in Australia and NZ, because it was pretty costly. I would've taken that money and visited more of Africa instead. And I would've tried to time my trip better so that I was in the southern hemisphere in december and january..

How long was your hair when you left, how did you keep it during your journey, and how long was it when you came home?
