Just so you guys know, we're working on the site - there was an issue and needed to take it down.

How is it coming?

Good question.
I'll post an update once it's fixed, it had taken up 40% of the resources on a Dual Xeon with 4GB RAM, not the first time either. Might move it over to another server unless a fix is found, not sure that moving it over will help since the servers are kept somewhat identical.

Question to Puffff: Not asking what your politics were before you left, but have they changed since getting back? Do you see the world differently now?

Congrats on the trip. I posted in the first thread about wanting to do it myself before I hit 30, and having 5 years left. Make that 4 years now and counting...

you're my hero ;)

I remember your original post last year and someone posted your blog here a few months ago, but I didn't know it was you.

Needless to say I hope to do something like this some day. My problem though is...I don't like travelling on my own. How did you like that part? Or are you one of those people that automatically becomes friends with everyone he meets?

Update: Website is back up, still not sure of the issue and so we'll be moving it over to another server where we will be able to better track its usage. I apologize about the issues though, it's nothing we're doing incorrectly but rather some issue between the script and the server most likely. Taking up 40% of resources on a Dual Xeon 3.0GHz with 4GB RAM is quite a bit and so we had to take it down to try and fix the issue.

i never had strong views on anything, but it was interesting hearing opinions from people around the world. I talked with a Syrian guy about the US involvement in the mideast, he had some interesting perspectives. talking with chinese on the trains in china, they also had interesting viewpoints on america and the whole taiwan issue. most importantly though, just seeing how people around the world live their lives, how different it is from what i'm accustomed to seeing.

i'm not a very social person, but when you're traveling, its not hard to meet people. keep in mind everyone is in a holiday mood and the majority of solo backpackers are open to companions. yes, there were some moments, particularly when going through less traveled countries, when it got a bit lonely, but i'd say the benefits of going on my own far outweigh the negatives.

It's amazing reading about how different everything is. I was particularly struck by the girl in China who didn't understand why it was nighttime in America while it was daytime in China.

I wish I could do something like this one day, but I think I'd be scared out of my mind traveling to a foreign land and not knowing the language or customs.

by the way how did you do it!!! If you spent 20k (which seems cheap for almost a year!) That means not only you spent 20k, but you forfeited any potential profit you could have made. Lets say you made about 50k/year....you gave up 70k that year! Just really...how did you do it?
