the time i lost an atm machine ate my card was inconvenient, and the time russian police tried to scam me was unnerving, but other than that, i cant think of anything really scary. most of the time, if i felt stressed, it was because i was tired. arriving in a new city after dark with no idea where you are and unable to speak the language was difficult sometimes, but after having that happen half a dozen times, you get used to it.

Other then the years I spent living in Saudi Arabia and Germany as a child, the longest I have ever lived outside of the US was nearly 3 months on the Greek island of Naxos. Best damned summer of my life! The sites, the sounds, the people, the friends, the food, the alcohol! Gosh damn it's nice to be young and see the world!

While I lived on that island, I ended up exchanging my IT services for free Internet. I rapidly gained the trust of two Internet-cafe owners who ended up offering me a job to stay on the island. Sometimes I wonder if 500 Euro/month would be enough. Probably would have been.

BTW, nice photos! Very well done.

I afraid I would be depressed after such a trip, after 377 days of absorbing so much life, culture, history, people, etc. I think life would be downhill from there...or at least until the next trip.

Another question: Did you make some life-long friends along the way?

well, i met a woman who became my current girlfriend along the way :)

Yep! I can relate. I once did 9 Western European counties in 6 weeks and some of the most adverterous and stressful moments were when I got off the train, in say Modena, at around 1:00 AM and had to walk around exhausted with backpack, looking for the youth hostel.

Tell us more about your Russian police adventure!

I'm actually starting the process now of planning a move to Nelson, New Zealand so I was really happy to see your pictures and read about your New Zealand experiences. :)

I can't remember. By the time I returned home, I didnt have any of the clothing I left home with. Either lost or threw them away to save space whenever I changed climates. I ended up with a pair of jeans, 3 pairs of boxers, two pairs of shorts, four tshirts, a fleece, and a coat.

Another question - did you bring a computer, or were you just stopping in internet cafe's whenever possible?

Had a laptop to store all my photos on and to write my blog on, but I got online at internet cafes. Used floppy disks to move files between the laptop and the internet cafe.
