I want to see your papers please. I'm sorry, a driver's license is not enough. Do you have your birth certificate? No? Where are you going? What business do you have around here. Where were you born? What hospital? What state? You have a strange accent, I'm sorry your responses are not sufficient, you'll have to come with me you are under arrest. You say you're a citizen.....well prove it. Papers can be forged you know. You just look suspicious, you'll have to come with me.

It is not much of a leap to think that you may be next. You know Mexicans are not the only illegals. There could be Brits, Canadians, Aussies, NZ's......you look like them too citizen but do you have your papers in order to prove that to me? I think you will have to come with me.........

paranoia lol

I just came across this article:

http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/LaurieRoberts/

Can someone from AZ comment on whether it's as bad as the author make it sound? If it is, I don't blame them for passing it. It's the bipartisan failure in Washington DC that forced the people of Arizona to pass a bill to protect themselves.

Im in Phoenix, and its bad. Theres a reason Phoenix is the kidnap capital of the US, and second highest in the world - human trafficking and drugs via illegal aliens. There are lots of articles and police blogs describing it.

I would imagine it would be to question someone. i.e. where do you live, where do you work, etc, and to ask if they are an alien. Based on responses, or lack thereof, a suspect can probably be taken into custody. I just read the entire bill and I dont see anything unconstitutional about it, nor do I see anything that suggests police can stop you for being a non-white. What I did find, however, is this clause:

Article 8, section 11-1051

B. FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR AGENCY
21 OF THIS STATE OR A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THIS
22 STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO IS
23 UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES, A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE,
24 WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE
25 PERSON'S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
26 PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c)

C. IF AN ALIEN WHO IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES IS
28 CONVICTED OF A VIOLATION OF STATE OR LOCAL LAW, ON DISCHARGE FROM
29 IMPRISONMENT OR ASSESSMENT OF ANY FINE THAT IS IMPOSED, THE ALIEN SHALL BE
30 TRANSFERRED IMMEDIATELY TO THE CUSTODY OF THE UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION AND
31 CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT OR THE UNITED STATES CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION.

What is this "reasonable suspicion"? Let's just be honest here, the one thing that makes someone a suspect of being an illegal immigrant is the color of their skin. You can deny all you want but the execution of the law reeks of discrimination.

Hanging around outside of the Home Depot is reasonable suspicion.

Arizona enforcing the law. lol

freedom hater lol.

I mean seriously though... how can you be against big government yet support this abortion of a law? For one, keep the damn illegals in the country and exploit the living hell out of them. More slave labor = more profits for us... and they don't seem too pissed about it.

Secondly, seriously... I'm glad I don't have to walk around with my passport in tow in case I get a "citizenship check" from my local 5-0. Ya'll that scared of the mexicans?

No. The reason this bill passed in because former Governor Napolitano went to Washington leaving the governorship to Jan Brewer. Traditionally in Arizona the primary function of the governor, whether Republican or Democrat, was to veto BS legislation puked up by our nuthouse legislature. Unfortunately Jan Brewer rose through that nuthouse and is one of the nuts. So when this turd of a bill passed the legislature there was no one to veto it.

Arizona Republicans savored this bill because not only does it institutionalize their own bigotry but it also is seen as a slap in the face against Napolitano whom these legislative Republicans hate. She won the race for Governor against one of their own.

Bigotry? Against what exactly? Brown people? Ive commented on the number of illegal asians here too, maybe you choose to ignore that. Yeah, we must be bigoted against those slant eyes too huh?

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/23/us/23smuggle.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rsshttp://chinadigitaltimes.net/2010/01/in-arizona-a-stream-of-illegal-immigrants-from-china/
TUCSON — The unforgiving terrain of the Sonoran Desert, south of here, whose searing summers and frigid winters claim hundreds of lives each year, has long been a favored avenue of entry for illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries. But in the last year, the authorities say, smugglers have increasingly capitalized on a much more lucrative business — trafficking Chinese citizens into the United States.
The number of Chinese immigrants arrested while illegally crossing the border into Arizona through the busiest smuggling corridor in the United States increased tenfold in the last fiscal year, according to the United States Border Patrol in Tucson.

You know what genious? We're bigoted against ANYONE here ILLEGALLY. Arizona is a major hub for human trafficking from Russia, SE Asia, and S America. And it is primarily illegal mexicans who are the coyotes (ones who do the smuggling).

Here's a report from 2006 http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/0723drophouse-main2.html?&wired:

In the world of human smuggling, metro Phoenix has emerged as an enormous staging area where illegal immigrants are held hostage in apartments, motel rooms or rental homes until relatives pay their fees.

State investigators say it is a $2 billion-a-year, black-market business that drives illegal immigration, spreading corruption and violence through the Valley.

On any given day in the Valley, agents say, thousands of undocumented immigrants are stuffed into drophouses as "coyotes" collect the cash, arrange for transportation and fend off other smugglers who would steal migrant clients for ransom.

There are so many coyotes, estimated at more than 1,000, so many immigrants secreted in drop- houses, that money-transfer stores handle hundreds of millions of dollars a year in smuggling transactions. Friends or family already established in other states wire the payments to Phoenix.

During a federal court hearing last year,Special Agent Angel Rascon-Rubio of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement described metro Phoenix as "the hub" of immigrant smuggling. "I would say that 90 percent of the transactions dealing with the sale of human cargo, those smuggled across the (Arizona) border, occur right here."

So FU with your bigot comments. We love the brown people. IF theyre legal.

Yes, it's that bad. But a lot of people apparently don't give a shit.

This is just a sample of bipartisan failure from DC to come up with sound immigration policies. If the Federal Government did its job, the citizens of AZ wouldn't need to come up with a law. In principle I disagree with this law but in practice I think it's better for the citizens of AZ because the Feds failed to protect them.

2) I guarantee you I'll see you bitching about how big government is terrible in another thread. You republicans are the most hilariously pathetic people in the world.

Tongue firmly planted in cheek I render those opposed to this worthless.

I'm racist for upholding and believing in the rule of law. I'm also racist for disagreeing with a fucking piece of shit president. I'm racist for demanding the federal government start enforcing the border. I'm racist for championing a free state, The State of Arizona for having the balls to do what the fed is supposed to be doing.

Fuck it. I'm proud to be a racist now. VERY proud. Very proud and making more of an impact than most all on this forum.

You must be one of those retards who somehow found his way onto teh internets.

The only thing hilariously pathetic is you believing this is about "scary Mexicans" and believing Republicans can't be for strong border control because it's "big government." Your putrid combination of political correctness and overall ignorance is extreme.

We are all free states. Thanks to the Constitution and we are also all free people. One of the few things the federal government is chartered with is protection of borders which isn't being done.

So the free state of Arizona said FUCK YOU OBAMA and did what was necessary to defend their border.

Not really. This law is "freedom to harass" for law enforcement. If the AZ legislature and governor wanted to get rid of the illegals they would nail employers' asses to the wall and the illegals would move elsewhere. This law doesn't do that. They don't want the illegals to actually leave, they just want them to remain hidden and exploitable. Arizona is addicted to cheap labor.

The Bill increases penalties on companies that knowingly employ illegal workers and makes it a crime to pick up illegals for day labor.

It's too bad the feds couldn't control the border and nail down a solid guest worker program.

Umm, read the bill which is now law.

I don't think you get it. Legal immigrants love this country more than most people residing in it.

i would say it is worse than that article talks about. drop houses, dead bodies in the south desert, people here illegally many times over killing or raping, drug violence from the south up to mid phx is as common here in the phx vicinity as the sun. i would say at the very least there is at least 1 news story a week regarding one of the above on the local channels, and those are the only ones that make the news. if you have friends that are leo you would know the situation is much, much worse than what the news reports. i am sure south like tucson and yuma it is even worse.

then at the rallies against the law we have the illegal's kids shouting in spanish carrying the mexican flag...real smart.

the reality, and i have said it before, is that legal immigrants are pissed at the illegals because they did it the write way, paid the money, waited in line. it is a fucked up situation regardless of how you look at it but as the crime spreads and there is a common denominator, it has to be dealt w/ when it gets as large as it has become.

also, the law isn't anything that isn't federal already so i really don't know what all the uproar is besides the news, both left and right side making a big deal that az is enforcing a fed law??? this just basically makes it so certain cities around the phx vicinity can not enforce the fed law. if the people are deemed illegal, they are turned over to the feds.

for some reason people are forgetting the illegal in illegal immigrant. the police are not the crazy mofos the media makes them out to be going around arresting anybody that is a little bit darker just for them to do more paperwork and have the department possibly sued, and when you know what to look for, it is pretty easy for the cops to figure out who is here legally rather quickly - it is their job to be right at that stuff from body language and the information given by the person pulled over.

you guys in other parts of the country all can post your opinions but you don't live here so you are rather ignorant to issues this creates on many levels. you need to take your ethnocentric glasses off and look at it from a point of view from people who live in it day in and day out.

also, now DC claims there are 11M illegals - i thought just a few months ago it was 20 or 30M?? just their way of pushing amnesty for what appears to be less people? i am sure that number will be reported to be less and less in the coming months, probably by the time the amnesty is being forced down our throats like healthcare the fed will say there is only 1M illegals in the country. also remember, all these illegals - no taxes either but they are sure using the infrastructure.

Well, they're paying fuel and sales taxes. Maybe we should get rid of income and property tax (I maintain that you can never truly own property if you have to pay a tax on it) and just have sales taxes.

Protecting the nation's sovereign borders is one of the federal government's core responsibilities. Hardly an example of "big government" you moron. Go take a high school civics class and get back to us will you?

No doubt, and it will be in addition to all of our other taxes.
