Go Arizona! It seems they are indeed taking our country back from invaders. The state signed a law that says there is no requirement to provide multi-lingual services, thus protecting businesses from frivolous discrimination or civil rights lawsuits. Remember, language is not a protected class according to the civil right act.

If it was always the law, why the need for this law? Because of a lawsuit of course. A unilingual Spanish speaking woman in Arizona was treated by a unilingual English speaking optometrist in his Arizona office. The woman's underage 12 year old daughter offered to be the interpreter; fearing legal, insurance and medical problems if the child misunderstood the optometrist refused, asking the mother and child to return with an English speaker over 18 or alternatively, visit some Spanish speaking optometrists. Instead, the Spanish speaker, whether legally in this country or not, understood enough of this country to file a discrimination suit against the English speaking optometrist. Refusing to settle, the optometrist finally won after the Arizona Attorney General took a year to decide no laws had been broken.

Good. Maybe at this rate I'll eventually not have to chose "English" every time I want to make a transaction with an automated system too.

What's the big deal? Go to any other country and they speak 2 or 3 languages. (Yes, I think people should learn english though.) Not that I'm defending the lawsuit. Frivolous lawsuits are a separate problem IMO.

Similar bill is working its way through the Oklahoma legislature now.

We already passed this back in 2007.

I shouldn't have to push extra buttons just because some foreigners refuse to learn English.
Is there a law that says private businesses have to give that option or do they just give that option so they can get Spanish speakers business? I'm betting it's the latter.

The "big deal" would be getting sued for transacting business in English, or refusing to conduct it in another language.

We have so many people here, from so many places, speaking so many native languages (Spanish, French, Russian, Italian, Vietnamese etc) that suing businesses for not being able to conduct businesses in whatever language (other than English) the prospective customer wants is absurdly stupid.

IMO, another "big deal" is the awful attitude of this immigrant. I hope she has to pay the legal fees incurred by the optometrist.

There's a difference though. In Europe the countries are bordered by other countries with different languages. The US has Canada on one side and Mexico on the other.

Keep up the good work Arizona.

Have been thinking about buying some property in Arizona and if this keeps up I will have no choice but to pull the trigger,

I'm an AZ native and still live there. I'm not against this at all but it is just so funny to see so many of you excited over something that, living my whole life here, has never seemed to be an issue.

You mean Canada where they speak French, and Mexico where they speak Spanish?

So you'd go to another country and sue them if they don't speak English? Isn't that how we get the reputation as "ugly Americans?" By expecting the world to cater to us? Why is it different when Mexicans come here?

Wow. You know I'm on the west coast and Ive been to BC like 10 times. Ive never once run into a french speaking Canadian. As for Mexico unless you live along the border you don't generally run into people that speak Spanish exclusively.

For the life of me I don't know how you facepalm with your head so far up your ass.
