Nope, went to school for product design got out and no design jobs so I get a job doing my hobby IT for a small electronics company. I did tech (hardware + phone + some software), sales, purchasing etc... for a few years on a decent salary (not good but not bad either). The stress level was higher than it should be, overtime was never paid b/c of the whole salary thing, and work eneded mixing with home a bit too often.

Now work for corporation, tech sales inbound phone. Not even close to a dream job but pay is based on performance and now I'm doing well. Fairly stress free since I only have to worry about my job and no work leaves the office and most people I work with are cool.

Dude...there are lot of high end professionals on AT. There are some wannabe's but some are giving it straight.

M.D. specialists can easily pull down 250k/yr.

I had always planned on retiring early and going into teaching, but I just realized why waste my time with something that'll make me miserable? No way I could ever work in an office/cubicle...or without helping children.

Been there, did that (Ceramic engineering which included a few EE courses). I decided to hang up being an engineer during my senior year. Went on to become a teacher and I love it. At first, I hated the remedial level classes, but now I enjoy teaching them just as much. Those students give me a challenge at work. The pre-calc, calculus, and physics kids are a piece of cake to teach. (Unfortunately for the pre-calc kids, I've decided to ban calculators 1 day a week this year. Or, perhaps I should say "fortunately.")

I did have a job doing something I loved, but quit because I was contract with no benefits and very little pay. Now, I have full benefits completely paid for by the company I work for now and I make about 60% than I did, but I hate doing what I do.

BTW: I used to be a game tester and looking back, I really liked doing QA on games. Now, I work in tech support and I wanna jump in traffic everyday.

i am a full time student and i own my own PC repair co...
i make about 2000/mo with the business...but most of it gets spent on school 🙁

lol...you people are making me have doubts on my major...'dont do your hobby, you will hate it' well WTF am i supposed to do? something i already hate? 😵

Currently, I'm a researcher and ain't nothing better then trying to save lives. I'm trying to kill cancer with chemistry and I love it. I don't get paid...yet.

* MD/PHD is my dream degree, so that I can have my dream job of being a Medschool/University Instructor while being a Dr.

i hate that god damn commercial

I love my job because I'm self-employeed. My success is directly related to the work I put in. I have faced many challenges very early in my company, but I am a fast learner and I'm only excited for the future. Some days I love waking up while others I don't. In the end though, I'm still doing what I love to do.

I hate my job. I hate it so much I think of jumping infront of a car everyday so I'd get hit and then I won't feel guilty about not going to work the next month or more. I make very good money, but I came to the reality of money isnt everything after I took this job.

I work minimum 100 hours a week.
I make $100K+.
I can't get any sleep.
When I get some sleep, its not relaxing at all, I spend 2 hours trying to sleep, thinking of whats going on in the office.
When I wake up, I am miserable. Incredible headaches, red eyes, dry skin, and I feel that my hair is getting weak as well.

All this for 0 acknowledgement of everything I do.

And I miss my family (parents)... I see them once a year maybe 🙁

Public Accountant? Investment Banker?

Yea, what job do you have?

I am an analyst within the financial institutions group of an IB.

And the winner is: Citigroup...our fellow competitors... 😉 Oh, wait a minute...in most areas of IB we are #1 now...hello colleague... 😉 😉

Actually, Citigroup is not one of our competitors 🙂

If it was fun, they wouldn't have to pay me to do it.
Heh. I thought that was my line.

I enjoy my job and what I do, but I freely admit that if they stopped paying me, I'd stop showing up.

Yeah, of course. I mean, even if you like the basic work...there's always a bunch of crap that goes along with it like...paperwork. Every job seems to have tons of paperwork and no one likes doing that.

If you are happy, what was the process you took to find out what you loved?

Please tell me your story.

OR

If you are not happy, do you plan on changing your situation? Are you OK not be at a job/career that you enjoy?

Please tell me your story.

I am just curious as to what other folks on here do and how they feel about their job/career.
I enjoy my career, but the monotomy gets to me sometimes. Right now I'd just like a change of location which hopefully I will accomplish by later this year.

I think after x-amount of years people tire of their job and even if they don't go into a different field a lateral job change to a new location helps to reinvigorate.

I think what they're saying is you're going to be doing something you hate anyway, so you may as well not destroy the enjoyment of your hobby in the process. Its kind of true. I now know if I do IT work I'm going to try and do as little work on PCs as possible. (Focus on just the networking/admin part of it, thats where the money is anyway) I used to enjoy coming home and tinkering with my box...now if my home machine doesn't work for even a second I about throw it out of the window in a rage.

Love...no.

Enjoy...absolutely. I'm a chemist and I have all the toys and such I could ever want to play with in my laboratory. I do wish I had more freedom to just try and make different things, but alas, most of my synthetic targets are things that others want me to make and analyze for them.

I've pondered the idea of starting up a microbrewery though. Given my background as a chemist, I'm sure I could make the technical end of the project work. However, the lack of capital funds and the admitted security of a 9-5 position have put that dream on hold almost indefinitely. I'll have everyone from AT (well, everyone over 21 anyway) over if I ever do start up such an operation.

I don't think working in general is for me. When can I retire?

No kidding!

I wouldn't say I love my job. Rather, I do it because I am good at it. I don't see myself loving any job that I can think of. Maybe being a fighter pilot, but that ship sailed long ago.

QFMFT!!!!

I used to love my PCs and tinkering with them. Now because I deal with IT bs all day long, I don't want to touch my PCs when I get home, and if something gets messed up on one of them I want to destroy it with a pick-axe.

I am in IT. If they let you take bong hits during the day... it might have some potential. The only upside is where I work I have great hours so I can pursue other interests and still support my family.
