Culturally ignorant you maybe, but you are correct.

Still more recently, the term is used to describe the culture and people of countries formerly ruled by Spain, usually with a majority of the population having Spanish ancestry and speaking the Spanish language. These include Mexico, the majority of the Central and South American countries, and most of the Greater Antilles.

Pretty sure calling a Hispanic (or anyone...) a Mexican is a biigggg insult. The other way around is.... a compliment?

its just a matter of area. hispanics (i thought) are spanish descent, not from mexico. im half "mexican", my dads parents were both from there. but, my dads side is mainly spanish, so i guess im part mexican, part hispanic and part german. either way, i dont care if people call me hispanic, latino, beloved patriot, half breed... its all just me. im an american. i never hear people use beloved patriot anymore either, i guess that term is gone.

Ooo, good job remembering "beloved patriot". Maybe the girl in the OP would prefer that.

Call someone Mexican around here is enough to get your @ss kicked in some cases. That implies you think they are illegal, which of course no one is. 'Hispanic' is re required term.

She's a dumbass.

Hispanic (Spanish: hispano, hispánico) is a term that historically denoted a relationship to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula). During the modern era, it took on a more limited meaning, relating to the contemporary nation of Spain.

Still more recently, the term is used to describe the culture and people of countries formerly ruled by Spain, usually with a majority of the population having Spanish ancestry and speaking the Spanish language. Why? Mexican just means they are from the nation of Mexico. Do people from Canada get offended when you call them Canadians?

What about the comparison of Mexican to American.

Someone is from Mexico, they are Mexican? Someone is from America, they are American? I feel silly for asking such simple questions but I got flamed for the comparison.

It started with a girl stating on her status

"Ha! "girl be Lookin half black and philipiNa" ...uM I'm neither, but nice combo...good guess"

I replied "You look mexican/caucasian to me... Which I think is a better combo."

She replies "uh i dont think its a better combo....technically aren't Mexicans = Caucasian?"

I reply "Is hispanic the better word? I'm not sure of the technicality, but I'm thinking mexican is like saying american. Not sure."

Her friend replies ""Caucasian?" oh my god i've never heard of a more ignorant term. Caucasus is a region between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.... so I'm guessing you have no idea what people look like from there.... perhaps did you mean "European American" or "White?" why are people so scared of using the correct terms and think that made-up terms are a more pc way of referring to people?"

And then replies again "Jason... you might not know this but you are either racist, sexist, or very VERY culturally ignorant... please do yourself a favor, and spare us the frustration and offense, and keep your mouth shut on these topics until you culturally educate yourself."

That is way too serious for fricken facebook. Making your friend's friends look bad (which is what she did to you) even if there is a disagreement in ideas is totally out of line. It's like being at a big gathering of people who know each other and she makes a scene.

The worst I've seen before this was just people talking politics and at least they stayed respectful to each other.

Well, beloved patriot, half-breed, and beloved patriot are derogatory.

Hispanic just means of Spanish decent. Latino just means a person of Latin-American or Spanish speaking decent. Neither of these terms is considered derogatory.

"beloved patriot" is only properly used for Puerto Ricans...damn, learn yer bigot language! :p

Nothing wrong if you call a Mexican "Mexican".

But if you call any other latino "Mexican", then yeah, we take it as a major insult.

There's a Puerto Rican I work with who gets offended when you ask if he's Mexican or call him a Mexican. He'll say that he's hispanic, though. He says that much of Puerto Rico and other hispanic nations get offended when you call them Mexicans because they don't like Mexicans either. Go figure

Only if they are illegally in the united states and are feeling guilty about having something to hide.

Tell her if she keeps crying you'll call INS.
She might be a legal citizen, but assuming she has any friends or relatives that are illegals, she will get scared and shut up.

Its how I keep all the asshole Mexicans off my ass here in Northern Virginia. They are extremely uppity and self-rightous considering they're criminal invaders.

considering the terms Hispanic and Latino are terribly incorrect, nobody in a spanish-speaking country should get offended at being called Hispanic unless they're getting pissy about the word being inaccurate. Hispania doesn't exist anymore folks! :p And those countries sure as hell don't relate the Spain anymore these days than we exclusively relate to Britain. You don't call most Americans British/English. We're English-speaking, and anybody in Mexico or a "Latin-American" country speaks Spanish.

How the fuck did we let the terms Latin and Hispanic get so convoluted and mean anybody who is spanish-speaking, and then let it get worse in that one Spanish-speaking country doesn't want to be known by that?

Does anyone call people from Spain, Hispanic? I'd love to see there reaction. Has the term come to basically just mean anyone who speaks Spanish but is not from Spain? Even though that doesn't improve how retarded that sounds when thinking of the roots of the word Hispanic, and Hispania.
