I just got railed on facebook for saying a girl looked Hispanic to me. She's mexican. Apparently, I'm culturally ignorant.

I've never seen a Mexican complain about that, and I know many Mexicans.

Tell her that she has a stick up her ass. I'm Korean and I could care less if people thought I was Chinese or Japanese. I just correct them and move on. We DO look similar and I can understand if other can't tell the slight differences.

I work in a Hispanic-owned advertising agency, and they refer to themselves as such on a daily basis. That chica has a gordita stuck up her ass.

Yes of Mexican decent, no Hispanic is not offensive. I'm pretty damn sure if you're Mexican chances are you're Hispanic. I personally am Hispanic anyways.

I know more Hispanic (non-Mexican) people who get offended if they're called Mexicans than Mexicans who get offended for being called Hispanic...

TECHNICALLY, Mexican people who have Spanish blood ARE Hispanics...(not all do, many Mexican people's blood lines are all "Native Indian" and no Spaniard. They wouldn't be Hispanic any more than a Native American Indian would be considered "White or Caucasian."

i have a sister in law who is Mexican. she gets offended very easily and never acts offended until she is back home with my brother and then she turns into Medusa. we have to tip toe around her.
funny thing is she feels she can call people white trash, gringos, whatever and they shouldn't take issue with it.
once she got pissed at my mother for doing their laundry when she was visiting them, and the worst part is she refused to speak to my mother and never told her why. finally my brother got it out of her, in Mexico the wife is to do her husband's laundry - no one else. well just say so!!!!

What about the comparison of Mexican to American.

Someone is from Mexico, they are Mexican? Someone is from America, they are American? I feel silly for asking such simple questions but I got flamed for the comparison.

It started with a girl stating on her status

"Ha! "girl be Lookin half black and philipiNa" ...uM I'm neither, but nice combo...good guess"

I replied "You look mexican/caucasian to me... Which I think is a better combo."

She replies "uh i dont think its a better combo....technically aren't Mexicans = Caucasian?"

I reply "Is hispanic the better word? I'm not sure of the technicality, but I'm thinking mexican is like saying american. Not sure."

Her friend replies ""Caucasian?" oh my god i've never heard of a more ignorant term. Caucasus is a region between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.... so I'm guessing you have no idea what people look like from there.... perhaps did you mean "European American" or "White?" why are people so scared of using the correct terms and think that made-up terms are a more pc way of referring to people?"

And then replies again "Jason... you might not know this but you are either racist, sexist, or very VERY culturally ignorant... please do yourself a favor, and spare us the frustration and offense, and keep your mouth shut on these topics until you culturally educate yourself."

its just a matter of area. hispanics (i thought) are spanish descent, not from mexico. im half "mexican", my dads parents were both from there. but, my dads side is mainly spanish, so i guess im part mexican, part hispanic and part german. either way, i dont care if people call me hispanic, latino, beloved patriot, half breed... its all just me. im an american. i never hear people use beloved patriot anymore either, i guess that term is gone.
