Are you in any way obligated to let store greeters and "loss prevention specilists" check your recipt at the door?

Agreed that people have bad days and shopping at retail stores doesn't help, but I see no reason to take the frustration out on an employee. They are simply doing their job by stopping you as required. Sometimes you just have to find other ways to let out that steam. Maybe writing an angry letter to management will help?

Im not sure if you are obligated to, but I let them anyways if they ask. I have nothing to hide, and I understand tat they are trying to prevent theft. My local Comp USA does it.

Guilty until proven innocent?

It's a business, and consumers have choices. If you have such a problem with the store's bag/receipt check policy, you don't have to shop there. God Bless competition. There are many stores that I like, but I choose not to shop there because of either their policies or service, etc. I am all for a company doing what they can to reduce theft. It is no inconvenience to me to stop for a moment and hand the guy at the door my receipt and let him/her take a peep in my bag. Id rather them do that rather than take big shrinkage losses and have those losses passed onto me as a consumer, although that's an extreme situation.

It's a myth that stores raise prices to compensate for theft losses. If they could raise prices and increase their profit, they'd do that whether or not they are being stolen from.

Holy Sh1t!!! You're right!!!

Actually, he's not. He's just obtuse. It's true that stores can't raise prices just because they want to, but theft damages profitability and a non-profitable business cannot continue to operate forever. If its competitors manage to control theft and keep those losses in line with profitability while it does not, then it will go out of business, the level of competition in the marketplace will be reduced, and the end result will be increased prices to the consumer. OTOH, stop-loss allows businesses to be more competitive and to reduce prices over time.

You are not required to have them check your receipt. If you don't let them check and mark your receipt, then they are not required to accept your receipt should you need to return/exchange an item on that receipt in the future.

You are assuming that theft is signifigant enough to put the store out of business, which is irrelevant. He is right that a store will charge what they feel they can get away with charging, regardless of theft rates.

If one store does not control theft while another store does, and all else being equal, then certainly the latter store's competitive practices could be significant enough to put the non-competitive store out of business.
A store might be able to charge what they feel they can get away with, but they have to remain competitive or they won't be doing what they feel like for very long.

Tell that to Tweeter

If they ask I don't object. Their store, their rules.

I've heard of people being patted down at Best Buy before. That's going too far.

I let Fry's check and mark my receipt just so I return the item when I need to. I guess I could see what color they were using that day and mark it myself, however. I assume they pick particular colors based on date and record them somewhere to verify.

Actually no they are not most of the time. MGT, when I was at wal mart and other places, tell you to NOT chase them, raise your voice, if they don;t stop juts let them go, etc... It the employees that take things into their own hands. I know I did several times. Mind you I was bored and wanted to run and tackle a guy stealing smokes, or throw a rock into someones back window as they drove off after trying to stab me and drive with another employee on the car... etc... MOST Mgt does not care. Yea some will if they get heat or their bonus was not enough.

At the same time a old door guy at wally world was giving a kid a hard time and I went up and told the old man its against policy to stop them, let him go. He was a asz to most and he did that mostly to young and/or poeple that were not white.

HAHA If I was in a bad mood I would never turn back, its thier problem if they didn't stop me while I was in the store. If they chased me and forced me to show it to them then I'd probably have a really good reason to complain and make them lose thier jobs. Thats what you should do.

I'm sure that if i did not cooperate that he would have no problem calling security and making the next hour or so suck.

Fvck that sh!t. Nobody is going to "detain me" unless they have a badge and a gun.

Nothing is stopping them then from calling the police and telling them they have reason to believe you have left without paying for merchandise...now as your packing up your stuff and pulling away 2 or 3 police officers can stop you and with the cooperation of store security can make your next hour or so suck.

choice is yours. not always beneficial to be so self righteous..

jesus man you sound like the stores are stalinist.

i walk out all the time at BB without showing my receipt. i just say no i just put it away and im not digging it out and just walkout. there isnt a damn thing they can do to you and if they call the cops for "suspected" shoplifting on me when I havent they will have bigger problems than just letting me walk out. besides i have never heard of a store that check receipts calling the cops on people who say no. and... the cops who get called to sh*t like that will be very pissed at the store for wasting their time by being their store policy enforcers.
