I wonder if they get to keep what they wore during the closing ceremony. 😀

It's a shame Brazil had to deal with such bad publicity beforehand, as it likely cost them hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars in the long run. They seem to have done and incredible job and put on a pretty amazing Olympics. The worst part about it seems to have dbag Lochte's immaturity and malicious storytelling (and some judged bouts, which wasn't the brazilians fault).

I read a few reviews that say these Olympics were sub-par in terms of organization and facilities. It seems they did well on a limited budget and horrible conditions beforehand, but the end result is that it wasn't really an "amazing Olympics" from that perspective. And the paralympics have been gutted.

But what the locals are worried about is that even though they didn't overspend on these by world standards, the limited budget is coming out of a bigger, even more limited budget, so it may impact basic services in Brazil, without adding that much to the infrastructure. (One example is a main road that was built for the Olympics connects a rich area to another rich area, and does nothing for the people who need it most... although one comment that was made was that it might help maids get to work in those rich areas quicker. Ouch.)

Not if you eat, drink and breathe soccer 😀

(And don't drink out of the diving pool, either)

I think the phrase in Brazil is: "Soccer is religion. Volleyball is our sport"
They won both soccer (revenge match too) and volleyball golds (men) and IIRC mens beach volleyball and silver in womens.
That's all they REALLY cared about. Was fun to watch them win.

All in all, from a spectator's standpoint I thought it was a fun Olympics. We got to see Phelps and Bolt end their careers on an incredibly high note. New talent coming of age and laying their claims. There were were tons of great human interest stories and tons of great "Olympic moments",

I don't get the flying fish reference. However, despite his parents' roots, he was actually born and raised in Canada.
Barbados is known as "The Land of the Flying Fish". It also was the main reason of a maritime border dispute between the two countries.

Also, because of his parents roots, he could've represented one of us if he wanted to, instead of Canada.

Speedo has dropped Ryan Lochte

In fact, not only has Speedo dropped Lochte, they also re-redirected $50000 of the money he would have otherwise gotten to Save The Children, specifically targeted at Brazil's needy kids.

This actually may turn out to be a win for Speedo. They get to drop Lochte and for less money they score points in Brazil and around the world with that charitable donation, which is also a tax writeoff.

I learn something new every day.

I see.

It's now four major sponsors who have dropped Lochte.

Speedo
Polo Ralph Lauren
Gentle Hair Removal
Airweave

Also, Macy's is removing ads with his picture, although they claim it's just because it's a scheduled ad change.

I wonder if this guy is going to be broke soon.

Beforehand there was a large Brazilian anti-olympic contingent protesting the olympics and the required spending, especially for things that don't aid Brazil's infrastructure, which has all been far greater than they can afford. They have major economic issues, not to mention ridiculous political ones. These include issues surrounding their corrupt acting president,Temer, who took over for the elected president, Rousseff, who's getting impeached on corruption charges. The impeachment charges were led by the current acting president and his cohort's effort, which actually makes it more of a coup. At the same time, temer is no less corrupt than Rousseff. Unfortunately these olympics were awarded years ago when they weren't in as bad of shape (and the corruption was better disguised.)

Given his rate of degradation in the pool, doubt he had too much longer left to milk those anyway.

More interesting is the less publicized picking apart of the Brazilians version of events such that it appears the "lies" were more embellished than outright fabricated.

Lochte should have come out right away and done what other star athletes have done...committed to rehab.

However the worst of what he did, he did by telling lies when sober. Is there some sort of rehab for general stupidity?

Does anyone else think paying a fine directly to cops on the scene before theres been an arrest or arraignment is really just a fucking corrupt system?
Was the fine paid to the cops or to the security guard(s)? My understanding was that the security guard(s) demanded that the vandalism be paid for on the spot or they would call the cops.

And I can't blame them. If you caught some tourists vandalizing your car and you knew that they were leaving the country in a few days, you'd probably do the same thing. I had a friend who got into a minor car accident in New York a few years back (he was visiting and the accident was his fault). Neither party wanted to wait for the cops and the guy told him, "give me $200 and we'll call it even." Both sides left satisfied with the negotiation and I suspect Lochte would have too if he wasn't a spoiled douche. I'm glad it's costing him money - my God man, you're 32 years old, grow the fuck up already.

It wasn't a fine. As we understand it, the security guard told the swimmers (through a translator) that they needed to pay the gas station for damages or they would call the police. The swimmers smartly dug into their pockets and ponied up 50 bucks.

As lupi said and reported by USA Today, Brazilian law enforcement may have exaggerated the damage. Nevertheless, that is a moot point. At the time of the incident, the swimmers made a deal so that the police would not be called to the scene. If Lochte is correct that the only damage was to a wall poster, maybe he felt it was a "robbery" of sorts (which it wasn't). What still doesn't make sense is why he bothered to say anything to the media in the first place. Perhaps this story would've broken anyway, but it was his own damn fault for breaking the story and highly "exaggerating" what happened.

Lochte's TV interviews a couple days ago were train wrecks. He said all he cared about were the 3 other swimmers getting back to the U.S. safely, but he more or less let them dangle in the wind. IMO that's clearly worse than being a drunk frat boy vandal.
