I'm pulling numbers outta my ass, but I suspect he lost 6 figures worth of $$$. What people forget is that famous athletes no longer have to compete to get endorsement money.Given his rate of degradation in the pool, doubt he had too much longer left to milk those anyway.
More interesting is the less publicized picking apart of the Brazilians version of events such that it appears the "lies" were more embellished than outright fabricated.
USA Today has a contrarian view now.Was the fine paid to the cops or to the security guard(s)? My understanding was that the security guard(s) demanded that the vandalism be paid for on the spot or they would call the cops.
And I can't blame them. If you caught some tourists vandalizing your car and you knew that they were leaving the country in a few days, you'd probably do the same thing. I had a friend who got into a minor car accident in New York a few years back (he was visiting and the accident was his fault). Neither party wanted to wait for the cops and the guy told him, "give me $200 and we'll call it even." Both sides left satisfied with the negotiation and I suspect Lochte would have too if he wasn't a spoiled douche. I'm glad it's costing him money - my God man, you're 32 years old, grow the fuck up already.

This is supported by a Rio judge who claims that strictly speaking Lochte's claim might not be entirely accurately portrayed as a false report, particularly because of the language barrier and because of the circumstances. Furthermore, a third party lawyer claims that they never actually officially file a police report, so strictly speaking it wasn't a false report because it was never officially filed. Also, the armed Brazilian guys may in fact have been official law enforcement... but if so they were working off hours as security guards.
However, even given that, it seems that Lochte doubled-down on the claims and even did so in front of the press, and also claimed initially that $400 was taken from them which doesn't seem to be case.
So the issue here wasn't so much his actions while drunk, bad as they were. It was how he dealt with it afterwards that got him into even more trouble.
