I try to minimize my racism, but people with a diminished mental capacity still bother me(try as I might to avoid this).

I try to be as non-judgemental as possible towards people based on handicaps, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.
I know I'm not perfect though, and sometimes those stereotypes slip out :(

But usually I'm pretty open to anything. I hate to be prejudiced.

Racist to the point of hating? No. Racist to where I distrust and/or have disrespect twords certain races/cultures. Yes.

Am I proud of this? No.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, I do draw conclusions on people based upon skin color and/or nationality. I am not proud of this by any means, but I am also not afraid to admit it either.

Unfortunately I grew up in a very, very white/caucasion town and the only experiences that I have had with other races/nationalities were not exaclty pleasant ones. I then proceeded to go to a college that had about a 95% white/caucasion and 5% "other" student population. Unfortunately the same things that I had witnessed in high school took place in college as well. From my my very uncultured experience I have not received favorable opinions of certain skin colors.

Like I said, I'm not proud of this, but I will not deny it. It is hard for me to forget SEVERAL bad *first impressions*.

BTW, yamahaXS had it right. Racism is acting on your prejudiced beliefs. For instance, denying someone housing because of their race/nationality is racism. Just as denying a woman a job because of her gender is sexism.

I think what we're talking about here is bigotry. And while I really wish I could say that I don't have an iota of prejudice in me, that's only wishful thinking. Also, I'm very skeptical of those who would claim that they're totally non-predudicial. No one completely escapes it.

But there's a difference between those who try to stay aware of their biases and not succumb to them and those who admit being prejudicial but aren't willing to do anything about it.

Worst of all though are those that can't even admit that they are.

not really, i can get along with most people. One of my friends who happens to be asian decided to pretend to hate white people for a week, another friend, who happened to be white thought it would be funny. Calling the phyisics teacher a "cracker" and seeing his reaction was possibly one of the funniest things i've ever seen.

I judge people by the content of their character, as far as that's possible, not by the color of their skin. If you go back to MLK's defenition of racism I'm not, if you use Jesse Jackson's I probably am just because I'm a WASP. Who's the racist?

as I have stated before, I am from a very culturely mixed background. though I look caucasion, my brother looks completely african american, and other family members look spanish, italian, etc... the point of this? its very funny to have different races come up to you and talk about "other" races, not knowing you are more like the "other" race than you are them. Its really fun to introduce my brother after they have just made a racist comment!

Valhalla-

If that's your definition of racism, then I don't think EVERYONE is racist, even to an extent. Sure, most people have preconceived notions about a certain race (stereotypes, yadda, yadda), but that doesn't necessarily equate to a feeling of superiority. I don't know how you can assume that everyone has this superiority complex about their own race but I'm guessing that you're opinions are formulated from your own experiences. I live in work and play in Los Angeles and I'm around different races ALL the time and the general social climate of this area is DEFINITELY than Texas and I can testify for myself and everyone I know that this is absolutely false. I think the statement that "everyone is a racist" speaks volumes about yourself.

Why is it that if someone is associated w/the KKK - they are racists. If they are associated w/the Black Panthers they are non-racists? Just curious...

I'm only racist aginst the girl that sits behind me in political science and smacks on her bubble gum like the world is gonna end in 1 hour (apprently, her mommy never taught her to chew w/her mouth closed)

I think it has to do with who is in control, past racial transgressions and population.

If by racist you mean:

1. Prefers to live around people who are socially similiar
2. Prefers to have friends that are similiar in their beliefs and traditions
3. Searches out a mate that has the same beliefs and values
4. Is proud of their heritage

Then perhaps I am racist, but I ask you this, who isnt?

It is just usually true that the people who fall under these conditions are usually of the same race as the person using these conditions. That is not to say it is always that way. A person who is not a bigot has the ability to accept someone who meets these conditions regardless of race. I contend that while it is possible to go outside these conditions on occasion, it is usually short lived and not as substantial as situations that meet these conditions.
