Are you a grocery store/supermarket snob?

Is Winco (from the article) that bad?

They are ghetto but have two advantages:
1) Low prices
2) Selection, the stores near us are huge larger than your average Safeway/Albertsons.

Of course they're also ghetto, you have to bag your own groceries and they don't take credit cards. Cash and debit cards are accepted.

Where do you get your groceries?

Depends on what we're shopping for and what's on sale.

Safeway/Albertsons/Fred Meyer
Trader Joes/Whole Paycheck
Target/Walmart
CostCo
WinCo

I'd be willing to bet that MOST of ATOT are grocery store snobs. The majority have never set foot in an ethnic grocery store or bodega.

Whole Foods, Stop & Shop, and Shop Rite

I don't know about most, but I grew up in Brooklyn and that's like 80% of where I got my (junk) food and breakfast from.

Sprouts
Costco
Trader Joes
Natural Grocer
Safe way
Frys

We have Whole Foods too, which I'll do in a bind but its price/quality doesn't stack up against Sprouts.
In that order.
We have a couple Albertson's around here as well. I've been in each once to check em out. No plans to return.

There are a couple of wincos nearby. I get certain items from them, but at least the ones I go to have substandard meat and produce.

That's pretty normal for Winco. Great prices on your everyday items...low quality meat and seconds for produce. (or so it seems)

We buy a LOT of our groceries from Winco...but meat comes from Safeway, Fred Meyers, (Kroger) Haggen, or Costco. Produce comes from a variety of stores

I've had a couple friends turn up their noses a little when I've mentioned we buy some stuff at Aldi's. They see Aldi's as bad because they have no name brands on packaged goods, equating that with stuff made in back alleys from floor sweepings.

I'm not sure I'd call them ghetto, but yes, they're cheap. In a good way though (not like Walmart); they only build where there's going to be a high volume of customers, which is why they're always so busy, and there aren't any frills to keep down the amount of staff. Never heard any complaints from the staff they do have though, since they're employee owned they seem to take good care of their people.

i go to safeway 90% of the time since it's about 1/4 mile from my house.

but when grilling, i will go to the spanish mercado's to get fajita meat and some of these ribs.

Asado

Yes - because I say away from 99 cent stores and discount places. I avoid bodegas like the plague.

I buy Costco because it's cheap, but the quality is pretty damn good.

Ethnic food stores rock. Plenty of halal, hispanic, indian & chinese grocers here. Try getting goat, curry leaves, raw peanuts or real lard from ShopRite or Hannaford.

Absolutely not I go to walmart and wegmans. Wegmans carries better cooking ingredients/fresh vegetables and walmart has better prices on boxed/long life/staple food.

Select items at wegmans are really pricey but then again you can get good deals on like... smoked mozzarella/spinach you can't find anywhere else.

I'd say I'm pretty normal.

Hell no, I will buy generics without thinking twice

That has backfired for me a time or two. We shop about 80% Fred Meyer, and it is really hit and miss with their store brands.
The worst was cranberry sauce that had the right color and texture, but the flavor was not there. It could have been anything. 😛

I like Hyvee for 99.9% of everything, but Dillons (Kroger) has a nicer meat selection a lot of the time, cheaper too). Bought a starfruit there last night and a pineapple as well. I'm cultured.

Used to be a snob and only go to Lucky's. They used to be absolutely the best. Never needed to go to any other supermarket. Now that they are gone I have no loyalties and shop around.

Winco has great prices on tons of stuff. I can buy my deodorant there for 3.50 when it is 6.50 at Albertsons or Vons. Cereal at Winco is almost always under 3 bucks even when not on sale when the other stores non sale price is above 4. But most of the time cereal at Winco is 2-2.50. Canned soup is almost always on sale for a buck to 1.50. I generally go to Winco to stock up on canned goods and name brand items. I generally don't buy produce or meat there.
