Its odd bringing an asian girl to dinner when all your asian friends brought white girls. Its like my bad...i guess i didn't read the memo....

Me think it's that inferiority complex acting up. "See, I am so good I can go out with white chicks." ...

lol...

It's mainly the "abc" ones that do that. Most of the "abc"s I know started with white guys/gals for their SO. One of my friends (girl) even said she would never go out with asian dudes. I don't know what the rationale behind all of it is, but I got ideas.

As to the original question, most of my HS was asian (most culturally 'diverse' city in the country). You could literally count the number of non-asians in most of my classes on one hand, and they were all at the "top" of the school. And most seemed phony, which is par for the course anyways.

That girl probably heard about how chauvinistic Chinese dudes are...

Work ethic driven (repeatedly) by parents usually. The handful of asians in our years were for the most part academically successful. Some truth in every stereotype. I think in the working world you will see the work ethic translated over too... again, for the most part.

More and more are completely Americanized (how we've hated our parents for nagging us) so you may see it less and less true nowadays. I know I challenged a lot of their beliefs and still do. I'll have to decide if nagging is the best policy later on.

On being smart - don't forget just like you have some really smart but slacking non-asians who do well, you have some pretty farking idiot asians. In those cases it depends how they're pushed and how much they care.

I went to private school... everyone was smart except a couple legacies and people who were brought in on athletic scholarships (and more power to them, alumni donations and game sales were a big part of funding).

I don't think the asians were any more or less smart on average than anyone else.

Intelligence is average for all races but asians are generally pushed more to succeed academically.

I'm asian and i'm the valedictorian of my school... but i think i've smoke enough cannabis to balance that out.

The other asians are either smart and work hard, work hard and dumb, or lazy as hell and dumb... so they are pretty much like any other race.

you forgot Smart and Lazy, which is how I would categorise myself.

I'm with imp here... I hear ya on all that. Seen it first hand. There's personal preference and sometimes you can attribute it to just having more things in common, but there's definitely the ones who absolutely will not date within their own race, but rather, some other race self-perceived to be higher up on the totem pole. If the other guy/gal doesn't mind being a symbol, I suppose so be it.

I wasn't disagreeing with him, just providing some possible explanation. As to the ones that are racially stuck up, who cares 🙂

They remind me of the black guy who would only date white girls in "White Chicks"

no more chauvinistic than a white dude with his eye on a yellow woman thinking shes timid and all that.

Yes. 2 Asian in my school got into every single Ivy League, and a crap load of Ivy League level schools. They both got into 10/10 of their schools.

I, on the other hand, only manage a 3.6 GPA

Many are hard working. Usually the ones that are have parents who have driven them really hard to get good grades. A few percentage of them are naturally able to absorb information and use it properly and excel greatly. Then the rest are average/social people, or totally lazy and do slightly below mediocre. I don't really see a difference in terms of race, but more about how disciplined a person is which depends on how they're raised.

In my opinion, I have a hard-working character, and take advantage of opprotunities given to me, but I am not naturally able to absorb material at first glance (although I wish I was).

*high five*, you wouldn't happen to be Harold, Kumar's best buddy, would you?

There are some quite big cultural differences between ?Asian? peoples and many Americans.

1. Asians are taught from the very beginning as children that education is very important and you can?t get far without it. Their elementary school is like our Middle and their middle is like our High.
2. In the United States a typical average adolescent male is more concerned with who is on his AIM list, MySpace, American Idol and a his personal sexual encounters rather then his studies and future (these are secondary). The belief is those teen years are supposed to be all about experiencing life. This translates to do what?s fun. Not what?s beneficial? The typical adolescent female has similar mindset.
3. A High School drop out who owns the new dodge charger has a higher chance of getting laid then the young biologist working on the cure for HIV. This just propagates the ?brain drain? we have in this country.

I could go on??

Couldn't have said it better.
Asians aren't really smarter, they just have a vastly different cultural mindset.
However, the independence given in US culture results in greater creativity.

i think this whole "asians aren't smarter, they just work harder by culture" is just a politically correct way of making everyone feel better about the disparity, creating the illusion that if everyone worked hard, they would all achieve just as much. Reality states that the best students in any class are usually the ones that have a natural intuition for the subject and can learn more in the same given amount of time. I don't want to make too many generalizations, but from my experience, the utter nerd is usually not the top of any class- it is usually someone that doesn't study half as much as I do that sets the curve.

I agree.

I'm not Asian, but I lived in Asia for several years. I graduated in the top of the class. What does that make me?

No, they played sports though (Korean exchange student was a soccer genius, locally adopted Korean kid was a state-nominated goalie who, despite being extremely short, could jump like no other, the other two (Hmong) were just nice, sociable kids).

An English major?

Pretty much, but my observations are pretty skewed, living in Northern Virginia. Most of the asians I know go to TJ (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology), which is ranked #1 in the nation I believe.

Its pretty brutal when the asian parents start comparing their kids...
