As a rich person, I laugh when people say things like this. It isn't always that easy to get a great job. But even rich people need poorer people to round out the botton of the economy. If they stop buying fast food and Xboxes, life will be worse for all of us -- even us rich people.

Don't be stupid...gas WILL hit $5 a gallon, maybe not this year, but certainly within the next 5.

It kinda sucks, but I don't mind all that much...my only regret is never having owned a truly fast car.

At the beginning of this year, I bought a motorcycle for some fun on the weekends. Lately it's been my commuter...you can always find parking, gas is dirt cheap, it's fun and nimble, and you can use the carpool lanes.

My thoughts exactly. Pretty much every other thread in here is about gas.

At least the rich are admitting their bias.

This is certainly bringing the class warfare and widening income gap to the forefront in the U.S.

There was a special on the news a couple mornings ago where a guy from London said they pay the equivalent of $10 a gallon, and have for years.

People in the UK are not paying $10 a gallon.

I hope gas prices go higher. Lack of energy independence is a threat to national security. This will get people thinking about other options (look at Brazil) and maybe now we'll actually do something about it.

Sucks.
You guys are getting close.

$1.22 per liter is about $4 USD per gallon. Most of us in the States pay $3 and change USD for 91 octane.

That is the silver lining. Of course with all the cowardly legislation, our governments wholesale willingness to wipe its collective ass with the constitution and the docile population giving its tacit approval by doing nothing about...I wonder if its even worth bothering lately.

Gas prices - don't bother me that much. If it gets too expensive ($5+ per gallon), I'll drive less or buy a used high mileage vehicle (new ones are overpriced).

Exxon making close to $40Billion last year, on the back of Katrina and speculation (not actual shortfalls) of issues with Iran, Iraq, etc, burns me up. Giving $400Million to their CEO on his way out, for a windfall profit that he didn't personally engineer, even worse.

Profit = Good.
Gouging = Unethical, and shameful, even if its legal.

There are just a handful of oil companies and they have a stranglehold on the market. Its' naive to think that there isn't some level of collusion on prices. Exxon was so embarassed of how much money it made, it paid for full page ads in major new publications to spin the announcement.

It's also not farfetched to see the political strings being pulled - oil company friendly president in white house, gas prices soar under his administratin, whats the knee jerk out? Drill in ANWAR, Altantic Coast, etc... Build the house of cards, watch the sheeple react predictably.

But let's compare that with the fact that they have universal health care, which has to be paid for through taxes, and the fact that our public transit system is nowhere near what they've got.

The US is going to become a two class society. Capitalists and poors. It is up to everyone of us to fight that or we are doomed as a society.

Good... because that is what it will take before gas prices ever go down again.

A lot of people want their low gas prices but also don't want to curtail their driving habits in any way, shape, or form-- very irrational behavior, IMHO.
Gas prices are not going to ever go down again, the process is to get the consumer used to excessive prices, then only marginally decrease it so as to ratchet up the baseline prices.
Supply and demand , my butt. More like only six suppliers nationwide and collusion regarding pricing.

I hope you're talking about OPEC because gas companies have no say in how much a barrel of oil costs. They just mark up cost + X%.

its only high in europe bc of the obscene socialist taxes on it

it will reach 5 eventually. cheap gas is not a right. if that breaks your bank, time to start adjusting the budget
