Of course, there is no Office 2011 for the iPad and there are no current plans for it either. As far as I'm concerned, for a working computer for the general population, if it doesn't support Office, then it's not really viable.

The iPad is currently targeted and designed as a net appliance, and much more so than the many nettops and netbooks out there. For iOS to do what you want, it'd have to significantly increase its scope. That may happen, but I don't think it will happen this year or even next year.

Documents to Go for iPad is pretty amazing, as far as an Office-for-iPad app goes:

So far it's handled every Excel spreadsheet we've sent to it at work

AKA the 'hey, we know you dumb fucks will buy this shit anyway, but we need the dumb fucks in what passes for the tech press these days to fawn over our computers again'.

I hope they move on from the ridiculous unibody enclosure. If the previous Air is anything to go by, this will be a design statement of their forthcoming range.

I know. I think I'd be pissed too if Apple delivered the best form factor available on a 15" laptop, and then charged accordingly.

DAMN THEM! FIE THIS WORLD!

Oh no, I get that for some it's like a 70's Alfa Romeo. No matter how crap it is actually, you'll buy it because it looks so good and you'll justify it to yourself in all sorts of ways which just isn't true. 10-hour runtimes, durable body, great screen, etc.

Now you also have the tech press gutter bloggers which is so full of formerly broke wannabe hipsters that they can't help but be as dumb as the above. And you also get many Apple enthusiasts who actually believe their machines are highly priced, and they develop this odd superiority complex about it. I guess it doesn't help that there's a litany of 'I can get it so much cheaper' from Windows fans who're as ignorant as them - but some of us have never spent less than a similar-class Mac, and in that case the experience is somewhat different.

Have you read any of the reviews on this site written by Anand? What would be your evaluation of him, and his reviews?

The the answers are yes and favorable, then go take a look at his review of the latest MBPs. And the newest MBP13 Windows review. Unless of course Anandtech is run by a bunch of 'tech press gutter bloggers' and 'formerly broke wannabe hipsters'. I consider it to be run by a fairly intelligent and reasonable group of people. Especially Anand, but I must just be a big ol' dumb Apple user.

However, at the end of the day, all I can simply say is 'Haters gonna hate'

The only day that matters to me in October is the 26th when I can finally get the Mac Office I've been wanting that replaces Entourage with Outlook and all the other nice improvements for cross platform compatibility.

iMovie, OmniGraffle Pro and soon Outlook will be the heavenly trio for me.

And oh, vbuggy, keep crying. Hater tears ftw.

Maybe they'll finally move on from X? It's been, what, nine years now? Let's have OS 11 already. :p

In any case, I wonder how long until whatever it is is running on my Hackintosh? ;)

Yes I have - and while broadly objective from a purely bench-testing-for-figures technical perspective, Born-Again Mac Fanboi is mixed in there as well. It's almost as though a type of tech writer can't help themselves.

Just to take a couple of points, no mention was e.g. made of the higher instances of BSOD's, indicating any test was purely benched for a limited duration. 'Awesome display?' why not compare it to machines actually in a similar utility/price range?

I wrote a while back about the two sides of the most enthusiastic Apple users: Former DIY'ers and the Dunning-Kruger. And at the end of the day, both come into it through different types of cognitive dissonance.

Hey, since I have a large part of the current Apple catalog floating around in my working / home environment I'll be happy to take a PM from the AT management to run up an actually objective review for reference purposes, if that makes you any happier. I doubt it will though.

I love how they pimp milling as high technology, instead of "oops, we screwed up and ran out of time to do casting, so now our customers can eat it by paying more for milled chassis"

I think the unibody construction is a great idea - so much more solid than cheapo plastic laptops. I've had a 14" eMachines for many years that I use for school and the hinge just broke. The thin metal plate attaching the screen to the metal hinge popped apart and broke the plastic connectors on the bezel. So now the entire hinge system is borked. Yay for cheap plastic construction.

I've heard a rumor that Apple might be using carbon fiber for their next line of chassis...that'd be pretty cool. My only complaint about the current unibody designs (aside from the weight) is that they still dent easily...not as easily as the old aluminum foil Macbooks, but still pretty easily. I still recommend getting a hardshell case like a Speck plastic cover to protect the laptop from dings, dents, and scratches.

Hopefully they'll release an updated OS that supports TRIM for SSDs.

I wonder if the Apple-branded SSD's they sell in the MBA and Macbook line have some sort of Auto-TRIM feature like the Sandforce-based SSD's do.

What if Jobs was going to announce as his One More Thing that AppleTV would have apps enabled?

If I could play Angry Birds on my flatscreen using a Magic Trackpad wirelessly, I would buy an AppleTV.

That and Flight Control.

They're Samsung. I order mine with HDD's and stick in Vertexes (except for obviouslyl the Crapbook Air's). Not, actually, seen any serious issues with OS X and SSD's so far in regular use but maybe I'm not looking close enough.

I've got a Vertex (non-Sandforce) as well as an OWC Mercury (with Sandforce), and other than much better performance on the Sandforce SSD, I haven't seen any negative consequences. But the SF drives perform so much better, I don't bother with anything else anymore.

This is something I've never understood. People keep saying that Apple TV + Magic Trackpad would be just like using an iPhone. Am I missing something here? The Magic Trackpad doesn't have a screen, you wouldn't be able to see what you're touching. It would have to act like a regular mouse/trackpad with a cursor that you move around on the screen. The only thing it gains you is multi-touch gestures. A game like Flight Control that is designed for a touch screen is not going to work nearly as well with a cursor controlled by a trackpad.
