While they could probably track down the iPods, they're not going to for this simple reason:

ONLY 42 GOT STOLEN.

Apple doesn't give a flying four-letter-word-for-fornication about $8700 in Nanos.

Exec1: Some guys jacked a case of Nanos from our store in Boulder.

Exec1: $8700.
Exec2: What the f***? We spent more than that on hookers and blow last night.
Exec1: Exactly. I don't even know why we got this memo.
Exec2: We are running a little short of whiny letters in the bathroom.

Even if it was, apple won't do anything to the people with the stolen ipods. For all they know, they got it off ebay, and it would just be inefficient to go after them.
