A case of 42 iPod nanos has been stolen from The Apple Store in Boulder's new Twenty Ninth Street mall ? totaling a loss of $8,705, according to a Boulder police report.

Employees at the 1755 29th St. business told police they noticed a 2-foot-by-2-foot Plexiglas display case was missing from a table about 10 feet inside the front door at about 5 p.m. Jan. 9. The case, which weighed about 30 pounds, contained 42 of the new 4-gigabyte iPod nanos ? new and thinner versions of the original music player.

The devices cost about $200 each and can hold up to 1,000 songs and 25,000 pictures.

Employees said they didn't notice anything suspicious on the day the case disappeared, the police report said.

All of the stolen items came with serial numbers, but none had been recorded before the theft.

The stolen case had been set up the night before it was taken. It wasn't taped or wired down, and store managers said they won't display a similar case in the future.

Police don't have any suspects.

Does that mean they had no cameras?

Oh noes! $8,705 is like chump change to Apple. Plus, it'll be real easy to track down the iPods if the thiefs are stupid enough to sync them with iTunes.

Yes, because the employees at one retail store are incompetent, THE ENTIRE COMPANY WAS OWNED.

The store is called the Apple Store.

The company is called Apple Incorporated (Incorporation?).

How do you know which one I was referring to?

You were obviously referring to the entire company, otherwise you would have said "Apple Store Owned" or something equally lame.

"Apple" usually refers to the corporation, not the store.

well, yeah, the company - and the shareholders - are "owned" because this will reduce their annual profit margins slightly. 🙂

your thread title sucks...

since all of the iPods have serials...good luck getting it serviced if needed....

Would they be able to identify them as stolen if they try to connect to iTunes?

Easy for you to say. They wouldn't refund my money for a DOA iPod I bought last year. I had to get AMEX to get my money back. Apple treats their customers like scum.

They act like they NEED the money.

Yeah. Somewhere up the chain, they have them recorded. Just backtrack until you find the batch of numbers that was missing at the store level.

Wow, people don't actually read the article huh? The serial numbers weren't recorded.

Articles are not always accurate, and sometimes reporters are given false information to lull criminals into a false sense of complacency.

It doesn't matter, I've already flashed all of the iPods and rubbed off any markings identifying them.

So now "owned" qualifies as losing $8000 out of the millions of dollars of revenues Apple generates? Owned used to be meaningful.

By putting out the word that they have no recorded serial numbers, they are probably hoping the thief will be dumb enough to try and return some for cash.
