<--- thinking of buying my first Mac laptop and leaning toward the Air.

Would this event mention the upcoming 2012 Air updates?

No.

In fact, since Ivy Bridge is delayed until later this year, I'd guess that you won't see a refresh until around Christmas.

On that note, Apple usually doesn't "announce" updates to an existing line of product. The only reason why they do it for iOS is because they change iOS drastically every year, but for Mac, if they have an update, it'll just show up on their website out of nowhere.

Yeah pretty much. I think the only other sign is when stock becomes low and doesn't get replenished, like the appletv right now.

If you can point me to a video where anyone from Apple publicly stated taht they 'invented' whatever, please do. Usually they say that they have finally done it right. Or that they finally figured out a way to paint things*, but generally, I don't recall them saying 'We invented phones bitch!'.

However, you're first point is totally right. Whatever the thing is, it probably already existed in the world in some carnation or another. However, Apple is usually in the right place at the right time to give it to us at a reasonable price, and they generally make the tech more accessible.

*That was the iPod Nano 5th gen video, 'we finally found a way to make really great looking coloured al-u-min-ee-um (Jony Ive)'

They don't publicly say that. However, many times it comes out through patent suits. Most recently the swipe to unlock.

Apple is and has always been a second mover, not the innovator/first to market. And they benefit greatly from it.

Yea, that is probably because although I am pretty dialed into technology, I couldn't name one tv hookup box thing that works with that tech, nor could i name a single computer that has it.

Conversely, any mac that can run Mountain Lion will support AirPlay, all you need is an aTV2 or better. AppleTV 2 is $99, and you will probably be able to get it for cheaper when the new one comes out (if your needs are satisfied by 720p). That is the difference right there.

Windows has a lot of features and doodads that OS X doesn't. The same goes for PCs, but that doesn't mean that ANYONE actually uses those features.

Do I fully expect Samsung or HP to release a little hook it up to your TV box that you can stream to from your laptop? Yes, I completely do. Once Mountain Lion and Apple TV 3 come out. Because then Apple will have demonstrated that the tech can be done right, if you actually make both products available and advertise the feature.

Plenty of laptops have WiDi, it's a standard feature on most if not all Intel wireless cards. All you then need is a compatible WiDi dongle for the tv and you are good to go. If you can't find one of those then you aren't very dialed into technology.

You still don't seem to get the fact that Windows OEMs released the exact type of display mirroring to tv you are waiting for Apple to invert years ago, Apple is the one playing catch up here.

What I am asking is if this is a feature that is advertised? Do people even know what WiDi means?

So, I hook this dongle (teehee) into my TV, and then... what happens then. How do I make what is on the laptop show up on the TV? How many steps is it? How accessible is it? Is there a convenient button almost in almost every application?

This is what I mean about Apple taking existing tech and making it more accessible. I push a button on my iPad or my Air and boom, the stuff is on my TV.

Intel and several OEMs ran a bunch of WiDi adds when it first cane out several years ago so I would assume anyone who wanted something like that would have been aware of it at the time.

To make it show up on the Tv just launch the WiDi setup app that comes installed on the system, it's not a difficult process at all.

Why would individual apps ever need a button to mirror the display?

Windows has had wireless screen sharing via Intel WiDi for years now and I can't remember the last time I heard of someone using it as a substitute for a dedicated HTPC.

The the capabilities aren't as I described/hoped, the Intel implementation sucks, you need to hang out different people, or you need to get your hearing checked.

I have a $200 bonus after first purchase CC from a different offer I'm sitting on. I sold my iPad 1 for ~$290 after fees a few months ago. I am ready. :D

Not to mirror it, to send the video from that application to the TV. When you mirror the iPad for example, it shows up in a 1024*768 box on your screen (or 768*1024 depending on orientation), when you send something via airplay from youtube or whatever, it fills the entire screen (assuming the aspect ratios match).

So, there is an airplay button in Quicktime or VLC. I am watching a video on my Air, want to watch it on the big screen, i click the button and set the laptop aside. Or, if I want to mirror the entire display and everything on it, i hit the button in the menubar.

I hear ya. I have an 16gig iPad (first gen) that I am getting ready to put up in the for sale/trade forum. I figure I can get rid of pretty quick for ~$200. The screen is still flawless, their are a couple very minor scratches on the back but nothing bad.

Whatever I get for it will subsidize the new iPad and AppleTV.

Damnit Apple, a year ago I had no apple products aside from an ipod. Now I have a 4s, my wife has a 4, my son has a touch, I've got a macbook pro, an ipad, and an appletv. I'm a total fanboi now, I keep waiting for my pc to do so that I can use it as an excuse to get an iMac or Mac Mini.

man iPad prices are tanking, just traded mine into AMZ for 290 gift card (like new). Figure I actually get more money this way vs dealing with eBay/PP fees.

AirPlay is amazing. You press a little button on screen and the video or picture is displayed on your TV and keeps on playing. It's seamless and works so well. DLNA is buggy and unreliable. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. And it's not seamless like AirPlay. What I would give for AirPlay on Android...

It's a little off-topic, but I use that card (Chase Freedom), and it's actually a pretty decent card. I've accrued about $100 worth of my own rewards right now, and I got an extra $100 for signing up. Just as a note, don't forget to go through their site for buying from certain retailers. You can get bonus points per dollar spent (1 point = 1 cent) by going through them.

I cringed a bit when I saw that Nike offers 10 extra points per dollar (essentially 10% + 1% (default) back), and I bought some shoes without using that. :|

The worst part about AirPlay has to be other non-Apple devices. For example, my receiver supports AirPlay (audio only), and last week it suddenly stopped showing up on my iPhone and iPad. There was no apparent reason why, and I eventually fixed it by changing the receiver's "friendly name". I assume doing that "rebooted" the networking in the receiver causing it to get out of whatever shitty state it was in.

To my knowledge, WiDi only does video. Apple's implementation will do video and audio, which is awesome.

The audio part of Apple's "implementation" has always been there. It's called AirTunes.

I think "Airplay" in its current form (transmit HD video + audio signal over WIFI network) has only been around for so long.

And on a side note, Intel's WiDI hasn't been around that long either. As far as I know, it came out in 2010, around the same time Apple introduced the Apple TV 2.

You really wanna blow my mind, Apple? Announce an iPhone 5 with a 4" screen and 4G LTE for both data AND voice.

ipads are nice but I'd rather have a nook color at 1/5 the price honestly. Then again I'm not a big fan of the tablet form factor.

It may not have a 4" screen, but I think it's a given that it'll be 4g though.

It was either verizon or at&t who said recently that all newly released smartphones on their network have to be 4g.

It was Verizon, but the thing about Apple is that they'll do what they want regardless of what the carriers are looking for.

But yeah, the next iPhone is practically guaranteed to be LTE.

I disagree on that front. The next iPhone is guaranteed to be LTE if the size and power consumption come down from their current levels of absurdity.

That is assuming that they don't put in a larger screen. I am not so sure that they will, but you never do know.

At the end of the day, nothing is guaranteed for Apple, other than that there will be a next iPhone.

I can understand what you're saying, it is Apple after all.

But if the next iPhone doesn't have LTE, I think it will be a big mistake. I didn't have that stance last year with the 4S but the LTE market looks way different than it did last summer and by the time October rolls around this year it will look even more different.

I agree with you, but I also don't think that Apple is going to put out an iPhone that is going to only get a few handful of hours of use on a charge. Most people can go the entire day, sometimes 2 without charging.
