FWIW, the iPad3 is the longest lasting 4G Quad core device. That's pretty good, if that's what you're into anyway.

That's cool and all...but with the pathetic data restrictions of carriers you'd blow through your limits and still have 8 hours of battery life left.

:(

The iPad2 had a 25whr battery, the iPad3 has a 42.5whr battery. Thats a pretty big jump in capacity and any gains in battery life the iPad3 would have had is sucked up by the new quad core and LTE.

It's heavier and thicker than its predecessor though, and gets unchanged battery life out of 70% bigger battery. I doubt it's the CPU, since it's still dual core, and LTE only makes 10% difference in battery life. So the new display, and to a smaller extent the GPU needed to feed it, seems like the power hog.

I'm not much of an Apple fan, but I am very glad they are pushing high resolution displays. It is a sad state of affairs when a 10" screen on a tablet has a higher resolution than 99.9% of desktop monitors. I want a 4K resolution monitor for a reasonable price and I want it yesterday!

you and me both,

I posted about this in the thread in the phone forum. i really hope the fact that apple got whoever to cram this many pixels into a 10 inch display will get some of them to start using high rez displays in laptops, if a 10 inch tab can have this display then a 11 inch ultrabook should be able to without much issue

Finally worked! Got two. Ahhh thank god no camping for me!

Not just no camping (which i'd never personally do), but no waiting in line to claim your preorder. I waited in line for THREE FUCKING HOURS to get an iphone that I pre-ordered. I'm just getting them sent to my house lol.

I don't know. Apple probably bought up all the capacity and inventory for the next two years. Everyone else gets table scraps except for Samsung who can make its own.

Pretty much summed up my feeling.

I just wish that people would actually reject the ATV3 and flat out not buy it out of protest. It was such a pathetic update.

1080p for streaming is a bit of a joke to me. I'll take lower resolution for higher bitrates any day thank you.

Most people probably couldn't even tell you the difference between a well compressed 720p rip vs a so-so 1080p one. But people are so convinced that since it's 1080p *IT HAS TO BE GOOD* when it's only a piece of the puzzle.

Easily one of the most disappointing products Apple has released in the last couple years.

Quad-core graphics, yes. Dual-core CPU.

Well, if I stream my Mac's screen to my TV (say, wireless gaming), then 1080p would be more noticeable.

Also I think I'm one of those people who can claim (safely) that they can tell a difference between 1080p and 720p... good rip or not.

Also as an aside, the new ATV can also stream Netflix 1080p... which is a huge plus for me.

----

In any case, landed myself a white 32GB 4G. Can't wait to "see" it next week. :)

You make a good point re: power consumption of the LTE radio, display and potentially the CPU, however what I find more interesting is this:

They increased the thickness by 6.8%. They increased the weight by 8.5%. They increased the battery capacity by 70%.

Until we see a teardown we won't know for sure, but my guess is that they increased battery density (if that makes sense, not sure if it is the right word) and increased battery volume, while reducing logic board volume. Looking at the ifixit teardown, the iPad 2 didn't exactly have huge tracts of empty space inside.

Sweet Jesus things have gotten way more expensive than I remember! I could swear they were cheaper when I got the original iPad. I settled for the wifi though, so it doesn't matter.

Apple originally talked AT&T into a $30 unlimited contract-less plan for the iPad, but AT&T kind of punked them and consumers not long afterward by killing the plan.

Kind of sucks Apple had to go with discrete AT&T or Verizon models again, but it's understandable.
