AOL Question

Right now I am using a free internet provider. I have a 56k modem, and I average between 41-45kbps. Will I gain any speed by using aol? Thanks

<< only use as absolute last resort <<

even as a last resort that would be pushin it.. 🙂 STAY AWAY FROM AOL! FAR FAR AWAY!

I had a feeling that no one was going to "just answer the fooking question", so I will:

No, AOL will not be faster than a free ISP. In fact, it will be much, much slower. Free ISPs are a major step up from AOL. 🙂

I love AOL!

They give you such a pretty browser that compresses all of your images and makes them really fuzzy and funny looking. That's really neat!

If you don't have realplayer and all your other favorite bloatware, no sweat it's all included as well as a wonderful registry
edit that doesn't let you de-brand your browser and outlook after you drop them and uninstall the over 300MB's it takes to
give you all that wonderful content.

If you don't want to use the AOL browser while surfing, just minimize it and use IE while the AOL browser sucks bandwidth...awesome!

My favorite feature is all the AOL friendly sites out there like Anandtech that give AOL users special privileges on their site!

Yeah, it's really cool! 😛

i find it pretty funny how the people on the aol commercials have these huge smiles....i bet if they went and secretly recorded the expression of some of their real customers the expressions would be ALOT different....like people taking bats to their brand new dell or compaq POS 😛

You guys are such bashers to aol even though the majority of you havent used it. With aol i can connect at 52kbs, 1 kbs under the fcc rule or whatver, aol is decent on download speeds and can match any other 56k provider. AS ffor busiy signals and reconnects, i never had any. And the browser? - there is a way to turn off image compression inside the prefrences, and if you still dont like it your free to use IE or anything you want just as you'd use with any isp.

i used AOL before and my moms friend has it, i used it there about a week ago and it sucks 😀. of course im on DSL 😀, so it's possible im biased 😉 and comparing it to my super l33t DSL hahahaha

AOL isn't worthy enough to be called America Online it should be called Always Off Line because it's stupid built in firewall kicks you offline with haste. I had AOL for about a month and was not happy. I had version 7.0. It was faster than all lower versions but still...you can't login to AT because it is restricted from their server.

I have used it...

Have always had frequent disconnects...

Parents have it, hate it! Takes them sometimes 5 min. to log on! Although I wil admit this has someting to do with location but, they are in Ft. Lauderdale, FL...not in some bonnie town...

I would rather a consistent 47kbs connection speed over 52 since this speed will lots of time choke off your upstream on a dial up...

I don't like the fact that I get frequent 27kbs connections when using the folks 'puter and having to log-off and on again to get a decent connection speed...

I personally use BellSouth and Net Zero and even NetZero smokes AOL for free!

I have used it too, and it SUCKS.

With all the spam they send you, you'd think twice about AOL. The only thing good for AOL cds are templates for cutting 120mm blowholes.

soo true... 😉

aol is a horrible isp, slow speeds for $22/mo

used it, still use it every once in a whlie at my friend's house, hate it.

not only does the connection suck, but they do a really sh!tty job of disciplining problem users.

I highly don't recommend it. I had AOL for 5 years (not my choice), so I know how it goes..

1. It takes forever to sign on, and about 20% of the time you either get busy signals, or it has to try multiple times to connect (each time adds another 2-5 mins on the to time to log on).

2. It boots you offline A LOT. On average, I'd say about once per hour to maybe once per every two to three hours of online time. That's on average/good days. On bad days, you'll spend about 20 mins trying to GET on, then another half hour trying to get it to STAY on, then about 10-15 mins of online time, then another 15-20 mins trying to get BACK on after it kicks you off and gives you error after error, then get so p'oed that you just say screw it. :|:disgust::frown: *phew* Anyway...

3. It's really slow. For example: I was playing this game on the [relatively slow] computers at school. It took about 1 min to load. At home, on AOL, it took about 12 mins, and the stupid thing still wasn't loaded.. and it was not all that big. When trying to d/l something, it would typically d/l at around 2 k/s on a average to good day.. on a REALLY good day, it'd be 3.5 k/s, max. On a bad day, it'd be 0.8 or lower.

4. There are other things people have mentioned.. you have to use the aol browser, and if you don't want to, you have to minimize it and use something else while aol still takes up space, etc.

5. You have to PAY for crappy service... come on, now. lol

6. Last but not least.. you can't post on AT if you have AOL! 🙂
