Anyone use Pearled Barley?

OK I've been eating pearled barley since last year before the store quit carrying it along with dried split peas. I discovered that with brown rice(but now white) and split peas along with the barley together, and the result is nice and tender.

I wonder why in Hell did the local Ruler foods quit carrying split peas and barley? Either that or both items are sold out when I go to the store.

So does anyone cook with pearled barely?

try a different store? getting those items here is not difficult.

I use par-boiled rice. It's cheap and tasty.

I still haven't tried any recipes using split peas yet. Although I do like French Canadian Bean with Ham soup.

Yeah I will go to Shop n Save or Save-a-Lot to buy them, or Walmart.

You haven't eaten split pea soup before? You don't know what you are missing.

You can order it off Amazon, or there are some bulk suppliers online that will ship if you want to do food storage. That's how I do stuff like my popcorn, field corn, etc. Gamma-seal lids + food-grade buckets ftw.

I also have a few bags of brown lentils. While I don't really care for them, I brought them in place of the split peas as they are easy and quick to cook. How can I get them to taste any better?

Since St Patrick's day is coming up, I'm thinking of making a corned beef stew(or is it pottage?) with the brown rice, lentils, and barley. and some onions of course. Any thoughts?

Lentils are pretty bland on their own, but if you like flavor, look into Ethiopian dishes. They can make lentils taste better than just about any food out there, it's crazy.

I love her

Thanks, I'll look up Ethiopian lentils. didn't know that they are a staple over there.

Well for St Patrick's Day, I'm thinking of trying something different. Instead of the cabbage and potatoes, I'll use brown rice, lentils, barley, and split peas along with some onions. Sounds like a delicious corned beef pottage anyone?

I think you two posters might have similar thoughts. Try conversing amongst yourselves and let us know what you think.

I'll add Indian dishes. There are roughly 15,000 Indian dishes with lentils, give or take half a million. 😛

Sorry I forgot I already posted this question. Brain farts....
No problem, I just found it to be funny.

I use pearled barley as a rice substitute. Nutrition-wise and taste-wise they are similar. But, their slight differences make it nice to have both in your diet just for the variety.

Like I said I have been cooking both of them together with split peas.

I meant to ask this before, but who do you buy in bulk from?

So how long would 50 lb bags or buckets of grains and legumes last a single person assuming I will eat it everyday?
