It seems it would make more sense to use something like: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10907&cs_id=1090701&p_id=9195&seq=1&format=2 which would be a better in wall solution.

Or something like: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10851&cs_id=1085102&p_id=8856&seq=1&format=2

(Maybe combine this with it: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10907&cs_id=1090701&p_id=7993&seq=1&format=2 You get more power outlets and usb ports.)

Or even: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10907&cs_id=1090701&p_id=7991&seq=1&format=2

I personally have tons of usb ports and usb wall adapters. However to each there own on what they wanna do to charge there usb devices. ;)

Nice find OP, I like the adapter style, 3 outlets+USB+surge for $12 and zero installation time plus you can take it with you if you travel instead of 2-3 different wall warts..

You can buy a Yugo to get back and forth to work as well.
uhhhh. there is absolutely no functional difference btw your overpriced embedded ports versus a multiport plugin charger. a more accurate comparison would be a normal car compared to the same exact car with tint and a spoiler.

i see no reason to pay more for the same function, even if the packaging/aesthetics or branding may be 'better'. maybe i just choose to do more philanthropic things with my money than waste it on luxury versions of accessories for luxury gadgets...

these really aren't worth it, just take the dam wall wart with you, ITS FREE. i agree hotels could use them but i'm still waiting for them to get proper working wireless internet so i don't have to tether to my phone when i travel for work

i always take the AC charger with me, and if you are worried about losing it you can buy one from many places for like 10$

Unless they come with adjustable voltage, those are fucking stupid.
Not every device charges the same way.

Umm, no.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus

The USB 1.x and 2.0 specifications provide a 5 V supply on a single wire from which connected USB devices may draw power. The specification provides for no more than 5.25 V and no less than 4.75 V (5 V±5%) between the positive and negative bus power lines. For USB 3.0, the voltage supplied by low-powered hub ports is 4.45–5.25 V.

The voltage output should always be very near 5V. The device should only draw the current it needs.

My laptop goes into a bag at night. My phone usually keeps working. My PC is set to go to sleep.

If you have your laptop/PC up 24/7 then unnecessary.

You don't leave chargers plugged in to outlets in the places that you normally charge your devices?

am I the only one that think those look extremely ghetto?

I'd be willing to bet one of the very few.

These really aren't a bad price if you are going a la carte. A single Decora recepticle and wall plate would be around $10. You can save if you buy the contractor setups.

Yes. However if my phone is low and I want to use it in another room this would make it easier, but really it's great for company.

We can all argue why not use extension cords, 2 to 6 outlet adapters, etc.

It's a premium product that offers convenience.

No use for one. My computer will charge even an ipad (at the same rate as if I charged it at the outlet) when in S3 sleep or even off.

You'd still need a USB cord though. If I've got to get up to find one of those I may as well go get the charger as well (I store all my extra chargers and cords in the same place). There's a couple empty outlets in each room so finding a spot to plug it in isn't a problem.

If it works for you though you may as well buy a few for different rooms. To each his own.

Meh. No difference than bringing or borrowing a regular plug. I chuckle when people ask for an iPhone charger at work as we have two USB chargers that we lend out.

Outside of iPhones I don't know many people that don't have dozens of these cables around.

You are dealing with micro/mini USB 9 times out of 10. I have a drawer of these.

Even buying apple products for a while now only limitedly, I have 3 spare iphone/ipod cables I don't use.

Normally the problem was I have company, my phone is dead and their's is too. My charger used to be at my office. I have since added another one to my bag. In a cinch I could bust out my MBP and let it charge (slowly).

We can hash out alternatives from this outlet, but it makes sense for most that need wall power. Thunderbolt may change things.

I've got a million of the cables but I've also got a ton of the chargers. The last few phones we've had all came with USB chargers and I've never gotten rid of the extra ones. Like I said though, I store all my cables and chargers in the same place. If I have to walk over to get a cable for the device I may as well grab one of the 3 or 4 USB chargers that are in the same drawer. I could imagine though if I started to carry more devices it could be handy if it means I don't need to have a big power strip where I charged them.

Again, it doesn't make much sense for me because it wouldn't save me any time or trouble but if it makes sense for you why not go for it?

RIP OFF
Go to Home Depot. 8 receptacle power bar for $4.

That would be true if this wall USB were convenient. Let's compare the two.

plug-in AC to USB adapter:
plug it in

built-in USB
-get a permit to work from the city
-remove old receptacle
-install new receptacle
-have inspected by the city

Due to fire codes and insurance, everything electrical is supposed to be inspected, and you need to get a permit before beginning the work. They started doing that because people would try doing their own wiring, they would do a shitty job, the house burns down, everybody dies. You can also see Trident's thread where the grounding is totally screwed up and he gets shocked when touching the fridge and the sink.
If your hack job of installing that causes a house fire and you didn't get an inspection, your insurance is void.

Considering the frequency with which I lose or break my wall charger, I am totally picking some of these up for the new house. Thanks, OP!

How many USB ports does it have?
After I plug in the adapter that came with my phones, it has 2.
That leaves me with 6 120V and 2 USB for $4.

Considering the frequency with which I lose or break my wall charger
Wouldn't that just mean you're more likely to break the wall receptacle?
Pretty much 100% of all damage I've seen to USB devices was where they plug in. The cord can take a beating but the USB slot breaks if you accidentally bump into something that is plugged in.
