You can adjust the resolution and some other settings using the FFXI configuration app, there's no in-game settings for that.

As for AA, you'll have to force it using your video driver. You have to remember this is really a 6-year old port of a nearly 7-year old Playstation 2 game, it's not going to have the niceties of a PC-native game.

That said, with some tweaking (including beyond the settings provided by the game itself), you can get it to look reasonably decent.

but how do you escape the damn game!! I had to alt f4, and it even struggled to let me do that ^_^.

Shutdown in the main menu

Yeah there should be a log out or something on the main menu. It'll like force you to rest for like 30 seconds or so. If you try to move around you won't be able to log out. Or just Alt + Tab. It'll boot you to the log in screen if you Alt + Tab.

/logout takes you to the character select screen
/shutdown closes POL

try /? if you get bored...

Really, I love the fact that FFXI has such a powerful command line interface. Aside from movement, you can play any job just by typing commands (although you'd have to be pretty fast).

I used to play this game using a nice controller. It took me awhile to realize that :). I seem to have misplaced mine, whats a decent controller with nice button options?

edit: Nevermind, I managed to get my PS3 controller mapped :D

There is no support for AA like someone else said. Best thing to do is oversize the background resolution so the game shrinks it and it gets rid of the jaggedness.

Well, I decided to roll a BARD. I've been playing for roughly a week or so and I'm already at level 19. BARD's are so awesome! Every party wants them. So far, having a good time, although i'm still linkshell-less its cool going back to old memories. Shame none of my old linkshell buddies aren't active anymore.

If anyone is in server Bahamut, hit me up. Handle: DannyL

Figured I'd give this game a try since I'm sick of WoW and hated Warhammer. Are they kidding me with a 7 hour patch? PlayOnline has to be the most godawful account registrar I've ever used. This isn't a good start....

I played this game back in 2007 at the behest of some friends. I was intrigued by the class system, and I have always been a fan of Final Fantasy.

Man, FF XI was...painful, to be nice. I played it for two hours, tops. PlayOnline was atrocious. The graphics looked like bad PSOne graphics (even with the settings cranked up), and the game chugged too! My computer could run Gears of War/BioShock with all their settings cranked at 60 FPS, and cruddy old FF XI was chugging? Give me a break! The interface was horrible...I had no idea what I was doing or even how to do anything. I managed to stumble out of the first town and fight a rat, and it kicked the crap out of me and left me with like 2 HP left. That was about the point where I quit!

Good thing I only paid like $10 for the Vana'diel 2007 Collection or whatever it is called. I love some of the ideas behind the game, but the implementation was horrible.

WOW may be "easy-mode", but at least it made the MMO genre more accessible and actually...gasp!...fun to play!

I hope that SE keeps the cool class concepts for FFXIV, but makes the game easier and more fun to play (more like WOW in that regard, if you will). Awesome character progression (FFXI class system) + awesome interface (WOW) = win MMO!

yup, it's the reason I do not want to keep playing FF11...FF14 will NOT have play online though.

Oh the memories. My first MMO.

People joke about WoW patch days, but FFXI was worse. Maily because of the patch downloading. Yes playonline sucks. For me it was my first MMO so I didn't know any better. Not being able to alt tab sucked, as such I used a 3rd party program that would allow you to do so. So much fun looking up info online when you cant alt tab...

FFXI had a large learning curve in controlling your character. But once you get used to it, it works well. Very minimilistic. Remember it was designed for PS2 so they use a lot of menus etc instead of mouse clicking. I don't think I ever touched the mouse after the first day of playing. That was the hardest part about learning the game.

Good to see this thread bumped. I actually re-activated my 4 year old account thanks to this thread.

FYI, The graphics are not as bad as you perceive. You can up your background res + your video card settings and it looks BEAUTIFUL. It made a huge difference. I also used the FFXI UI Mod to change the menu and icons and it looks way better.

First thing I did when I started back was find a way to use my PS3 controller with FFXI. It worked. After a lot of research I found the way. I gotta say its the best way to play the game; with a controller, no mouse or anything is needed

Not sure what the cry about PlayOnline is, its straight forward, just adds a lot of space and time between. Besides that, it auto logged in, click a few buttons and you logged in.

The patching did take forever. I've had to patch it three times now and with my FiOS connection, I patch it all near 4-5 hours worth. Sucks.

I'm sorry I bumped it then.

Yeah, hahaha when I logged in, I had sooo many patches to download, wow....out of the blue, I got a charge on my CC from square enix for 26.xx dollars, I was a little confused...so I did a chargeback because I had no idea why I was charged. They never answered my calls, so i figured i'd let it die...again.

it how there billing system works, if you reactivate your account on May 28, when June 1st roles around they bill you. You will be charge for the full $12.99+ for the full month of may, SE won't adjust the amount for the 2 or 3 days your account was active. your stuck paying that full $12.99+ for those 3 days at the end of may. Then you gotta pay your normal payment $12.99+ for june as well. SE billing system is jacked up.

Wow brings back memories. FFXI was my very first MMO and I bought it on launch day. Forgot what server I was on but managed to get my Red Mage to lvl 64 I think. Out of all the MMOs I've played since then (not much, but WoW, Guild Wars..if you consider it a MMO, Silkroad Online), Red Mage is still my favorite class of all time. I loved enfeebling the crap out of the mobs, spot healing/nuking. Didn't like the Refresh cycle much though, lol. I had like 6 Elemental staves with like crazy macros that swapped them out whenever I cast a spell of that element.

I hear you guys about the UI and how it was designed for console. I played the game exclusively on this Logitech dual-analog stick gamepad I had at the time. Never used the mouse and only used the keyboard for chatting.

It was pretty crazy and interesting playing with Japanese players and learning their emoticons etc. ^^

My God....
The macro ability in that game was immense!!! It was so unbelievably good.

It is probably worth the "experience" and if you have $15 spare, it would be good.

Certain elements of the game in my opinion have not been done better in any other MMO ive heard/seen/read about so far.... just the gameplay, the addictiveness is not there. The game pushes you away.

Yea, the learning curve used to be crazy (although I heard they added "helper" NPCs to get you started with the basics). Do you still LOSE EXP when you die? I remember leveling up on a fight, only to die on the next mob pull and deleveling back to where I started that night, lol. You literally lost a few hours of EXP in 1 death. Made me that much more tenacious to not die (pulling out all the stops and blowing all the cooldowns to survive in tricky fights was definitely intense).

In WoW if my group does poorly we just "wipe" and all stop moving and die to save time, lol only costs some in-game gold for equipment damage.

I would. I may even consider it myself only because I don't have any of the expansions, beside the Rise of Z.

Also, patching from the 2008 collection shouldn't be as bad. If you get on, get on Bahamut server (if possible). My handle is Dannyl, I'm on from time to time. No Linkshell so I basically solo and group up with random parties. Still having fun leveling my white mage (50) and Bard (35)
