That's one of the benefits of having such a greatly improved economy in the game these days. Doing a quest and getting a few thousand gil as a reward is actually worthwhile when that isn't the pittance it used to be. In fact, one of my main sources of income lately is farming a certain drop and then turning them into a NPC for the quest reward. Prior to that, it was teleporting people around for a fee, which is also pretty decent with the way prices are now.

I still think that getting started from scratch can be difficult, but it's not the impossible task it once was.

If anyone happens to start playing on Fairy server, look me up (Talym) and I'll probably help you out a bit if I'm not busy at the moment.

I played on Siren for years...got the game at NA launch and played 2 characters to cap and past all limits. I dual boxed for some time and early on with the help of fishing I became very wealthy. I still have one of my characters-manimal-on siren with a crapload of items and gil. I cant for the life of me cancel the ID because of the life and fun I put into it. I just dont have time to playthe way the game needs to be played sadly. I play tf2 for 40-to a hour when I need a game fix. I slept very little and was very pale back when this game was my main gaming fix...

good game with good music and cool areas, just need some kind of graphical update, seems like an empty game though, not what it used to be in 2004-2005

I fired up Play Online and don't seem to have the correct password or ID. Crazy enough, I found my .txt file that had my ID and password but it still tells me that it is incorrect. I'm assuming this means my account is completely deleted?

There was some return home to vanadiel promotion a while ago. Unless they changed it in the last few years in the beginning they would remove your content ID if you didnt for pay 3 months of service.

Looking around for the disks to reinstall bah you guys got me back in!!

You're on Siren, right? Hit me up if you see me around (although school has limited my playtime...).

They say your account gets deleted after 3 months of not playing, but I've never really heard of this actually happening. They seem to keep all the data. North American beta accounts are still around last time I checked about 18 months ago. I never touched my beta account after beta was closed, was really surprised seeing it available when I canceled my account 18 months ago. I had friends due to linkshell/clan drama permanently delete their accounts and were able to recover it a few months later by calling their customer support.

Man I'm so afraid of touching FFXI again. I spent so much time on that, looking back they were great times but kinda feels stupid at the same time looking back. Camping hours with 18+ people for a chance to fight some monster against 2-3 other clans that want to claim it too. And the damn monster drops that specific item at like a 5% rate and everyone wants that item. And the mob only appears once every 24hrs, some of them even more rare... Madness lol! I quit those type of activities and continue with other ingame stuff with smaller clans/linkshells but even that was ridiculously time consuming. I have no idea how people are able to play MMOs and function at work. There's guys at my job that seem to play a bit of MMOs and they aren't zombies at all at work. I barely function from just full time work and traffic.

I remember FFXI fondly as it was my first MMO. It did very, very bad things to my GPA. I had several million gil and a lot of the good gear before I quit. Fishing+Blacksmithing made tons of gil before they patched out the rusty caps.

One of the things I miss most from FFXI was the missions and the story line that went along with it. The cutscenes etc. It made the game feel like more than just the endless grind.

I played a paladin to 72ish on sylph before wow came out and I switched. My brother played on a mac, and blizzard was one of the few that supported it with their releases. I have thought a few times about returning, but I gave away all my gil and items, and the thought of having to get everything back is daunting. Not to mention there probably not being anybody I know still playing.

As nice as it was to play with people cross-culture, I wish they would have made seperate servers for each region. Main reason was that there was always a 2 second or so lag on HNM spawns here from what people in Japan near the main servers saw. It was near impossible to grab a spawn. Oh the fun in talking with their auto-translation system!

Enough reminicing.

LOL. I was probably in that competing clan trying for the same kill. The worse part was when my linkshell disbanded and i kind of went rouge and started completing quests on my own. I was a white mage, tarutaru and you'll see my ass running down getting killed all the time because I was trying to sneak my way through. Sneaking and Invisible kept me alive some crazy situations and areas. Oh man, how I loved it. My heart would race cause I made it across some plain alive and just used invisible and sneak and logged out and rinse and repeat. It was very fun for me but at the same time, you do look back and realize how many wasted hours. I will call support and see if my ID is active-able. If not, then that is probably a sign. lol

Fuck Square-Enix. I tried to do their Return to Vana'diel thing and they deleted my account entirely and I couldn't even reactivate it. Such a fantastic way to waste $50 on a game :(.

HATED the game and still played for a year, just cause I didn't wanna bail on people, till WOW came out of course. I was like the highest white guy on the server in terms of armor, I had all but one piece of the AF2. I also had a Juggernaut Axe in my MH, I hope I am getting these items right, its been a LONG time. ;)

Not necessarily, there was an update with security a few years ago where they changed everyones password that was under 7 digits or so, or they made you change it I can't remember. Try calling Playonline and see. As long as you have the registration codes and Credit card info you can change whatever you want to.

The game didn't even have AA, which right there just ruins it for me.

You can adjust the resolution and some other settings using the FFXI configuration app, there's no in-game settings for that.

As for AA, you'll have to force it using your video driver. You have to remember this is really a 6-year old port of a nearly 7-year old Playstation 2 game, it's not going to have the niceties of a PC-native game.

That said, with some tweaking (including beyond the settings provided by the game itself), you can get it to look reasonably decent.

Some light registry editing is all that is needed to make the game look much better:

Don't force AA, though. It does nothing in FFXI except slow things down (due to the way the game is rendered).

Forcing AF is helpful, though.

I personally never had a problem with forcing AA, but it's nowhere near as effective as oversampling the background resolution, as your link explains.

That I do have, except for the CC, I might have a new one at this point, can't even remember how my life was back in 2003, lol. I'll call and see what happens. I don't even know what server I was in. I just remember I had a kick ass white mage.

I have forced AA on for as long as I can remember, I think at the time the game didnt even support AA. Did they patch the game to make use of it? This is going off my memory of 6 years.
