I'm looking to buy a sword. Preferably less than $300, and preferably a katana (but a good European straight sword would be considered, too). It's for ornamental purposes, but still would like it to be a real sword that could (theoretically) be used as a weapon effectively. Has to be online purchase, unless there are some sword shops within NYC or something (like Sword of Destiny episode of AD, haha).

And no, this is not for preparing for zombie invasion that will occur in 3 weeks :shiftyeyes;

I can't remember who made mine, but they are out there in your price range. Mine was $230 and is..uh..combat ready? Heh. Be aware you'll need to oil it after every use/every 6 months or so. Not exactly a huge deal.

Edit: This *was* probably 3 years ago now that I bought the thing, so prices may have gone up.

What price range would be more reasonable? I can't do more than $800, tops.

Would mineral spirits work for cleaning it?

Mineral oil, yeah.

Just don't confuse it with the bottle of lube or you may be unable to hold on to the sword when the zombies invade.

The name Paul Chen rung a bell, so I did some research. It's the people who built mine - but it was before they were a large operation. I don't know if quality would have changed from that - mine was all hand made, although they don't do the steel folding as I read it's not necessary with today's more pure steel. Anyways, I'm sure there are some sword forums out there that can help you out.

Are these guys good? I think I saw thread one time:
http://www.angelsword.com/

EDIT: wow, they are expensive. Would have to save for a while for even cheapest katana. I could probably do it, but $2,000 is a little steep.

They have a layaway plan. Nice. Guess my $300 was a bit unrealistic, lol.

I know where you can get a great one for free but you have to pull it out of stone. ;)

Do I have to rule Britain after? They don't look to kindly on sharp objects, anymore.
How they expect me to come back...

i'll never understand the obsession with katanas.

even if we assume japanese swords are inherently cooler than european swords (history shows european steel is better, and if it came to a proper fight, my guess is european swordsmen would win... hell, if the european is using a sword breaker, it's a simple matter of trapping the katana and snapping it.) if you're going for a strictly ornamental display, why not go with something not everyone else has?

personally, if i were going for an ornamental sword, i'd get a chokuto.

I prefer curved blades (particularly katanas and scimitars), but I am up for a good European sword, as well. I don't know much about swords, but I would like to start by purchasing a good sword rather than a cheap one. If you have any recommendations for sword purchase, I would appreciate it.
