Don't know if it's been said yet but MD Geist. Part one is all you need. Part two for closure but the meat of the story is part one. It's cold blooded, bad to the bone action packed circa 1980's gore anime. Lot's of heavy metal in the english dub version I grew up with on vhs. Part one is about 45 minutes long, was on youtube last I checked. Do yourself a favor and watch the uncensored directors cut, its a masterpiece.

I watched a few more last night...

Dive!! - I originally wrote this one off as it seemed like that swimming anime... a bishie-fest. Since I like sports anime (if they're done well), I figured I'd check it out. Overall, I'm not sure if I can formulate much of an opinion about it. The first episode didn't really establish much more than the overall goal of the team, so I don't know how interesting it will be watching them strive to achieve it. The show does seem to have a bit more of a lewd focus, which could make the bishie-fest not too bad. :p

Made in Abyss - I think what stood out first on this anime was the art style. Sort of like Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, this series has a very heavy use of watercolor -- mostly for the backgrounds. Although, it does sometimes animate entities in the watercolor too, which can be a bit distracting as they usually have far fewer frames of animation than they did when animated normally. (That weird red serpent thing was an example of that.) Overall, the characters are fun, and the show sets up a sort of mystery, but also leaves a lot open. I'll have to see where things go to determine whether it's worth it.

Centaur no Nayami - I saw this one listed as a recommend watch this season, but man... this slice-of-life show is kind of boring. It deals with following a centaur, Himeno (Hime for short), and what happens during school and such. The first episode was about a yuri-tacular kiss between Hime and another student, and the other part was about explaining the world that they live in. I figured the show was about a centaur living in the normal world, but it's actually some parallel universe where creatures evolved beyond being quadrupeds, so the entire world is filled with rabbit/sheep people, centuar, merfolk and angels/demons. Although, I'm not sure how the rabbit/sheep and the angels/demons have more than four appendages, but whatever. Anyway, this show will have to really step up its game if I'm going to keep watching. It was about as lackluster as Konbini no Kareshi.

I still have more to check out.... I started 18if, but I still haven't finished it. It's a rather weird looking show, so it's had a lot of trouble keeping my interest.

I thought it was Made in Abyss?

It's ok. I like Knight's & Magic better. Not too impressed by Aho Girl yet.

It is Made in Abyss. Knight's & Magic is shaping up to be a good overpowered-protagonist show.

I normally don't for got < 24 min shorts, but some of them are great (eg. Mangaka-san to Assistant-san )

That's one that I've been debating whether I should pick it back up. I didn't drop it for any reason in particular, but it was certainly awkward with the Mangaka asking his assistant to try on bras and stuff. :p

Blame! was pretty good (Netflix original). Trailer here:

https://www.netflix.com/title/80115466

Kind of a Matrixy slice of life. I kinda wish it had been a TV show instead of a movie because I'd like to see the story continued & also fleshed out more, although apparently there are several manga novels, so hopefully it does well enough on Netflix to warrant a few sequels! My only complaint is that the animation looked laggy...Polygon Studios did the CGI & while it's higher-grade than say the latest Voltron, it throws you off at times. The animation on the No-Face spiderbots is creepy as heck tho haha. I might have to buy the English paperback versions, the art looks pretty great:

Did you know Blame 2 is coming out next year?

Nope, but awesome! Never heard of it before yesterday. I just sat down to watch Netflix last night with dinner & Blame was headlined on my Roku, so I clicked play & got sucked in :tongueout:

So Kimi no na wa is getting released on bluray and 4k UHD bluray later this month.

Since it's getting a 4k bluray release, does this mean the source material was produced in 4k res? Or are we dealing with a 720/1080p source upscaled to 4k just cause?

If it's 4k source it will be the 2nd anime that I am aware of to be released at 4k res. The other one being Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt last year.

They could have rendered in 4k and 1080p. or take the movie theatre 4K release and use that.

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits - This short has a sort of odd premise to it. Essentially, it's a variation of modern-day Japan where areas have their own mahou shoujo idol, and when they're popular, they'll get things like their own TV show and such. In this small town, which doesn't have its own idol, these two girls decide to re-enact an idol's show after that idol cancelled her appearance. Another student discovers them, and decides to try to make them into stars. The characters are kind of fun, it's light-hearted, and I don't recall having any problems with the art. I guess the problem is that I don't know what the main hurdle is going to be yet, so it's hard to get invested. It also reminds me of Sakura Quest a bit, but without such a bleh protagonist.

EDIT:

For some reason, I can't submit any other remarks about other series.... It tells me that it's "inappropriate content or looks like spam" :confused_old:

Princess Principal - This series surprised me a bit. It's about an empire that rose up in England, but eventually splintered into two separate states. The series focuses on a group of spies that are hidden in a school (comprised of younger girls) and their interactions. It sort of sounds like Gunslinger Girl, but I think this series has a bit more of a light-hearted aspect to it, which I like. However, the characters have their own quirks, and at times, they can be quite dark. I'd like to see where this one goes, but my only worry is that it lacks an overarching plot.

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. - This one kind of disappointed me a bit. It's the other resurrection series, but the presentation and such in this series is just so weak. It has this weird chibi-style cut that it uses between scenes, and it's just... awkward at times as they don't spend a lot of time between the cuts. It makes me wonder if it's based on a 4-Koma, but I don't think it is. I'm kind of hoping this one gets better as it's also the series with an OP protagonist, but I don't think it will.

EDIT:

Ugh, I can't post my thoughts on Hina Logi. It just refuses to post it!

Hina Logi : Actual Mahou Shoujo. Younger girls, but not too awkward like other series. Story follows princess that ran away who has some potentially mysterious capability.

EDIT: Had to completely rewrite this one with a super basic summary....

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt was produced in 4k and that is the only Anime to date that is shot in 4k. IKR why Gundam show sucks -_-

Kimi no na wa was not produced in 4k it was produced like any other high budget Anime movie. I am pretty sure, correct me if I'm wrong.

I doubt it. It cost too much and some mainstream companies are bankrupt lol. I can see One Piece getting a 4k movie though. I doubt others will catch up anytime soon. Sad really :(
its all about the monies. :p

OK, I can't get past the animation in Knights. Same thing with the new Voltron. Can't stand 3D CGI anime, just really bothers me to watch. Blame was better, but the stuff like the lag still bothered me a lot. But I guess 2D hand-animation is crazy expensive, so we get what we get. iirc a lot of the new 2D shows are CGI as well through software packages like Moho. I think Blame partly worked because it was done better than Knights, and also because a lot of it was architectural, so the focus wasn't on other scenes as much.

Just finished Castlevania on Netflix. It's kind of an anime take with Trevor Belmont & Alucard. It was actually a lot better than I expected! Although they cheaped out like crazy on some of the art...like his beard...rofl. I also didn't realize it was only 4 episodes...I thought it was going to be like 13 episodes or something...episode 4 popped up as the season finale, d'oh! :(

If it's anything like film, the production costs go up exponentially to produce a show at UltraHD resolution.

some animators has said they will animate in 4k when they get paid 4x as much

shit most stuff is animated in something under 1080p (720/900) and uprezed
