Anyone here seen Alien 9? Seems to be hit-or-miss for most people, but I liked it a lot. Somehow tragedy and cuteness is a winning combination in my book. :hmm:

So, now that we're into July, the new summer anime season is starting up! What shows are you looking forward to?

http://beta.anichart.net/summer

I expect there will be much gushing over Sword Art Online 2. I'm not too sure which will be good, but just based on the descriptions there, I'll probably take a peek at...

Akame ga Kill!
Aldnoah.Zero
Barakamon
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Majimoji Rurumo
Momo Kyun Sword (maybe)
Mujaki no Rakuen (maybe)
Persona 4 The Golden Animation
Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!?
Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance (maybe)
Shirogane no Ishi: Argevollen
Sword Art Online II
Tokyo ESP

Whenever I think of CLAMP's X, it always makes me want to listen to X Japan's X... mostly because the song was used in a promo video for the X OVA.

I've watched a few of them so far...

Akame ga Kill! - This one seems alright so far as it has a bit of a strong start. It'll probably end up being a series focusing on the odd interactions between the main character and the group along with fights with the evil people. Although, with how the group annihilates them all... I'm not so sure what's going to really happen to put any sort of pressure on them.

Aldnoah.Zero - I finished episode two not long ago, and I'm still not sure about this series. I'm pretty used to CG in mecha anime, but this one just feels a little too excessive to the point where I feel more like I'm watching a CG show than anime. As for the story, it seems okay if not a bit generic. It reminds me of this recent anime that I can't seem to recall, but I do remember that one also featured the whole Mars vs. Earth thing.

Barakamon - I haven't seen the second episode yet, but I thought the first one showed that this might be a good slice-of-life anime. It has interesting characters, and I like how they can present the little girl (I think that's a girl...) as annoying to the main character yet not to the audience. Some shows kind of fail at that last part.... This is a series that I'm more looking forward to each week as I think it might have potential.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - While this feels a bit more like a shoujo series, it's not so bad. It features your typical, oblivious male protagonist and the female protagonist that pines for him. But it adds in a fun little story aspect of the male being a shoujo mangaka, and she becomes his assistant. I think this might turn out to be another fun, quirky slice-of-life series.

Momo Kyun Sword - This anime was flippin' awful.

Sword Art Online II - This show has some lofty goals to live up to given the major fan base of Sword Art Online, and honestly... it's doing a pretty poor job. Albeit, it is really early on in the series, but the first season had already pulled you in by this point. The second episode was an absolute waste of time as they focused entirely on
kirito's "sister" (cousin)
, and given no one cared about that person during the first season, it seems like a bad idea!

Tokyo ESP - Jumping straight into the fire seems to be popular during this anime season like with Aldnoah Zero. Tokyo ESP wastes very little time in the beginning, which will probably excite those looking for some heavy, crazy action. The show features people called espers, which are very, very much like mutants in the X-Men universe. They all have a single ability, which at this point, appears to be somewhat unique? Anyway, going along with the X-Men theme, you have a group of them that believes they're better than humans, and all hell breaks loose when they go to prove it. I think this one could turn out to be interesting if they can keep the pace up, which I think could end up being a problem. If anything, I think this one will go "Black Bullet" on us.

Here are the ones i watched so far. I watched like 8 first episodes back to back so wont go into detail other than if i liked them or not

Aldnoah.Zero - (first episode only) - Seemed to be good. The story got set up nicely in the first episode. I wouldnt call this anything new or exciting story or premise wise but still was entertaining.

update - The CG is a bit over the top. Its gotten pretty dang noticeable too. Any time the mechs go to fight it just screams CG. Still an ok series so far but nothing I'd write home about either.

Rail Wars! (first episode only) - Didnt interest me hardly at all. Guess the story was just meh to me but maybe if you knew more about Japan it would be better. I dunno just didnt get me excited at all.

Tokyo Ghoul (two episodes) Actually enjoyed this more than i thought i would. Went in figuring "o great another zombie theme". But so far its been interesting. Story is different enough to be interesting and the style of anime has hit both dark (zombie) and light (human) which is nice. Ill be watching more of this one.

update - Still enjoying it. Probably one of my favorites from this season of anime. Im actually looking forward ot the next episodes to see where they take the plot.

Argevollen (two episodes) - Its another mech anime. Its been ok so far. Kind of the typical boy who sucks becomes only able to do something type story. Its decently entertaining. Nothing special though. ill keep watching it though

update - nothing really new. Its decent. Way less CG than Aldnoh.zero which is nice.

Sword Art Online 2 - (first ep only) liked it so far. But i liked the first and also the movie (think its a movie...it was an hour and a half sort of "after the main series" thing). If you didnt see that it might hep to watch it as it does give some light to the sister that might help. Either way i liked it so far so we will see.

update - its slow going but im thinking ep. 4 will start getting the story rolling a bit more. So far its been ok but also hasnt felt like SAO either. Once Kirito gets more involved i think it will feel more like SAO and less like a SAO rip off like it kind of has so far.

I just got Akame ga kill! and some of the second episodes so we will see if i change things later lol

What censoring in Toyko Ghoul? I havent noticed any that i can think of...

Zankyou no Terror - So far its a pretty good in my eyes. Its still getting going plot wise but i have a feeling it will get more indepth in the future. Right now its still just the bad guys vs good guys type thing. Plus an outside force which could be an interesting plot twist down the road. Its another one I will keep on watching for now!

o and ive gone back and added updates to my post above :)

I've been a bit surprised by Aldnoah Zero. I expected to see the usual "hero gets a powerful mecha to fight back!" plot line, but that's not what we got. This actually feels a bit more like the opposite of a Gundam series where you're watching Zeon fight against the Gundam! :p

Ugh... Sword Art Online II really needs to pick up the pace. All of episode 3 focuses on Sinon's (the sniper from episode 2) real life, and they focus on what's happened to her. My problem with doing that is that I don't really care about Sinon yet, which means I have very little vested interest in seeing what makes her... her. We need to see gender-swapped Kirito! :p

I started watching Magimoji Rurumo, and it seems decent so far. It's supposed to be the typical silly situational humor anime with a bit of ecchi flair to it.

I'm following these:

aldnoah no zero: standout of the season with strongest animation, tightest storytelling, least annoying characters of any show. base premise of earth fighting mars based occupation is solid enough.

SAO GGO: still good, pacing issues but they existed in the LN too. unfortunately the production staff seem to be struggling to convey the inner thought processes from the novels that created most of the drama.

tokyo esp: strong hardcore action first episode which suddenly veers into a superhero origin story 2nd ep. double flashbacks and recountings generally suggest poor script planning.

zankyou no terror: very very pretty animation, near feature movie quality. unusual premise with teen terrorists. not sure where this is going. a bit too dependent on jj abrahms style mystery box trope carrot dangling.

barakamon: small town slice of life, 1st ep was heavy on charm and cute girl, has shifted to gag format in last few ep.

I'm skipping these:

shirogane no ishi argevollan: mediocre all around, absurd main mecha design esthetic, stupid baton passing all over the place.
glass slip: slice of life with visions of the future twist, nothing compelling so far
akame ga kill: some interesting characters, but very facile storywise with no real strengths and middling art.
dramatical murder: interesting but motley character designs, laborious pacing, no real hooks or likeable characters beyond some AI pets.
tokyo ghoul: skipping this strictly on the absurd premise. zombies who eat people are allowed to roam around and form gangs and power struggles. cuz governments have a live and let live policy for infected murderers [/sarcasm] .

I don't watch anime, but I got linked to this the other day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiIQ2zTwguc

Girls und panzer its called... fucking weird lol I kinda like it, might start watching that!

that's the tentpole sequence of the whole series. if you arent onboard after that one you have no soul.

its a deceptively unassuming series. a pretty simple premise that you are ready to write off, and then it sucks you in with very tight pacing and nice development. by the time you get to the climactic battles you are trapped in the cute and the action. two thumbs up all around.
