I checked out a few more new series since my last post:
Blade & Soul - Eh, I have to say that I didn't have high hopes for this series based upon the poster art, and I wasn't wrong. The show starts off with almost an Elfen Lied sort of feel where you encounter this absolute bad ass of a girl. The problem is that this girl doesn't really have any emotions and barely speaks. She just isn't very interesting. The fight scenes are also somewhat short and lacking in some good, dramatic tension. The one thing that annoyed me the most about this one was some poor direction in regard to cutting. One of my pet peeves in videos is useless scenes. I shouldn't see a scene in a video and wonder what purpose it served. This anime suffered from that.
Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou - I really wasn't too sure what to expect from this one, but before watching it, I was sold on the comedy, romance, school tags. I thought the first episode started off a little slow, but it definitely picked up a lot more toward the end. The characters are... "unique"... to the point where I'd probably argue that the main character is the blandest one. That doesn't mean he is awful, but just not as colorful. This series reminds me a lot of
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo.
Captain Earth - You know that a series that puts something along the lines of "don't worry, all will be explained" in the a-b part cards is probably going to irritate me. One thing that I usually dislike is when video games, anime, movies, TV shows or most other things just dump tons of terms and information on you, but they usually fail to give any sort of explanation to things. I don't really know much other than the dude has this weird gun that they called a weird name, and he pilots this mecha that attaches to three other parts to form his larger mecha, which he uses to fight evil moon people. I might give this one a few more episodes, but if it continues the "let's keep people in the dark so we seem mysterious" charade, I will just stop.
Black Bullet - I wasn't expecting to like this one much, but I was surprised that I ended up being rather interested in it. Now, I wasn't drawn in by the story so much as the characters. While I always find the loli stuff a bit on the creepy side, the characters are still fun to watch. The beginning is a bit weird as they don't tell you much about what's going on until later in the episode... with a somewhat unnecessary exposition monologue right at the end.
Abarenbou Kishi!! Matsutarou - I don't like it. The series seems to be banking off the main character being utterly unlikable, which they did a great job with, because I don't like the character. The problem is... if I don't like the character (because he's a giant douche), then why would I watch a show about him? I will admit that I did find a few of the moments to be a bit amusing, and you could see where they're setting up the main character as this super-strong guy. I'm debating whether I want to give it an episode or two more to see if it gets better when he's actually a sumo wrestler, because he isn't one even at the end of the first episode.
Next on my list of things to watch...
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
Seikoku no Dragonar
Soul Eater NOT!
Knights of Sidonia
I'll also be watching the second season of DATE A LIVE, but since that's just a continuation of the first, I probably won't talk about it.
