Anyone have any idea how to stop a running car if you're locked out of it?

damn you auto locking doors

Update:

Let me tell you what happened so you can stop bumping it. First, I was 3 hours from home where I have my only spare anything- a spare keyfob, which won't work while the engine is running anyway. Spare keys for late model fords have HUGE plastic heads on them for the ignition chips so it's prohibitively large to keep in your wallet. A straight door-only key might have fit though and I will have to look into that.

A locksmith came and got the door release latch on the inside of the passenger side door.

As he was doing that, I was running the fuel consumption numbers, assuming that idling at 600rpm is a ratio less fuel consumption than 2500rmp <- cruising at 85-90 and I figured that the car might have made it til morning when I had a new key cut from the VIN at a ford dealer. Not sure if there would have been any consequences to running the car completley dry except for having to bring it more gas.... mabye I should have done that instead.

Oh well. I fvcked up. I pwn3d myself. $116 and change

there is no solution except to get someone to break in.

I have seen people get under trucks and jack the transmission into another gear- surley you can yank some modern version of the distributor cables?

Yeah, use the second set of keys that "every" intelligent person has to open the doors! ;)

If you really want in the car, just break the damn window. Otherwise, find you a car jacker and ask him to open it up for you.

Pull the battery out, let the car run out of gas. I'd say that's your only option unless you know how to work with a transmission, or you're willing to learn. Have any tools around?

Backpressure by means of stuffing the tailpipe? Not sure how harmful this is, or how you could do it effectively enough. I mean, you could use a holesaw to cut out a circular piece of wood the right size to block itself in there, use some rubber for a gasket, then a hose clamp to tighten it. I doubt you want to go to that kind of effort. The question is, what kind of pressure do you need? Maybe an upripe potato will work if you hold it- I know a V8 engine will shoot a potato out of the exaust. Wet rag?

If you can get under the hood, dump a CO2 fire extinguisher into the air intake. That'll kill it. Maybe you don't need to get under the hood for that one, a big enough cloud of it, if it's not windy, will do the trick. I say throw a big tarp over it, weigh down the sides to 'seal' it, then emptry the CO2 into there. No O2, no combustion. Bingo, stopped engine, with no real damage. It'll be hard to start the next time, maybe.

1. He can't pull the battery out, since he can't get inside to pull the hood release.

2. It wouldn't matter anyway, disconnecting the battery wouldn't make the car cut off.

3. The transmission is irrelevant to cutting the car off, unless you have a manual and you can get inside the car to let the clutch out in a high gear to stall it.
