Anyone get speeding tickets in California lately?

A friend of mine was going 45 in a 30, and was slapped with a $446 speeding ticket, which, unless you're on the AT high horse of people who've NEVER broken the law, seems like a tad bit high.

I've gotten 4 speeding tickets before, and the worst one was 48 in a 30 that was $271 about 7 years back. Has anyone noticed speeding ticket fines going up considerably recently in light of the $9x10^231 deficit CA is facing?
 
My lil brother got a $251 ticket for going 70 in a 65. Your friend's ticket seems a little steep - was he in a work zone?

He was 15 over, you were 5. Big diff there.

Of course fines are going up, esp in Calif where they have no money. What does the gov. do when they screw up? They screw the people. And thus, a 251 dollar ticket for going a perfectly safe speed on a HIGHWAY is born.

In jersey it would be probably 300 + 2 points or 450 with no points.

Arnold approved the doubling of vehicle reg fees, ironically that was what Davis was recalled for.

They did not double - they went up 78%...........

Davis was yanked because the state was flush with money and he advocated higher fees for the legislature to give to entitlement programs.

I got a $160 ticket for "careless driving" (yeah, I deserved it)... I called the courthouse and asked about my options to avoid an insurance increase, and they told me that I could pay $450 and get no points. That struck me as odd... I never pursued it because I was in the process of switching to NJ Manufacturers Insurance, and they said the ticket wouldn't affect our rates (though if my wife didn't already have insurance with them, they wouldn't have insured me at all because of the ticket). Is there a legal term for this "bribe" I pay to the court so they won't tell my insurance company about my ticket?

The Federal, State, and Municipal governments are spending whores with no job to support their habit. When times are tough and their thieving tax revenues are down how do you think they are going to get money?? Anyone who speeds enough to get a ticket these days is paying for the respective government's inability to save during the good times to weather the bad times. Slow down people or you are going to get raped.

This is NJ's standard arrangement for moving violations, and it's a total racket. If you go to court and talk to the prosecutor, they will only have one statute available that they can reduce the charge to that won't impact your insurance. I can't remember the name of it, but basically it carries a huge surcharge that goes directly to the state (not the municpality where you were speeding) furthermore, the state will only allow you to plea this statute twice (although they may change it to three times) in your life. I was at court fighting my own ticket a couple of months ago and there was a man there who couldn't use this because he had already done it in 2003 and 2001!

I really don't understand the logic to it. Obviously it drives revenue to the state, but once I've had my two strikes, why wouldn't I just plead not-guilty and waste everyone's time dragging the cop to court?

78%, 80% double, same shit.

Most people associate Davis recall with doubling of the car reg fees, that is the only tangible thing people were affected with. Most people don't give a shit about what gov't does...only when it directly affects them.

yep, got a $202 ticket (251 including traffic school) last month. Was going 80, like how i've been driving for the last 10 years. I also thought they must be giving out tickets because of the budget.
 
Haven't gotten a ticket recently, but back in 2002/2003 I got a ticket for going in "Excess of 100 mph" on I5 (65 or 70 mph zone) and my fine was only $350... granted I was suspended for 1 month, but still...
 
Yep. The $35 cell-usage-while-driving ticket adds up to $150 with different fees tacked on to it. Some lady was complaining in a newspaper article about the fees. In my opinion they should raise that fine to $1000.
But the other fees are out of control. I have no idea how people can possibly afford to pay.
 
VA finally got rid of their $1000+ fine (aka money-grab) on speeders. 65 mph on I-95 is too freakin' slow. I-95 should be like the autobahn - no limits
