I'm just glad I didn't listen to you fools and bought Apple stock despite all the predictions of the failure of the iPad, I've never seen such a concentration of stupid supposedly tech savvy people in my life...

Seriously, how the hell do some of you manage to find your way to a bathroom and use it correctly?

Is this supposed to have anything at all to do with this thread or is it just a random insult?

As to the OP, tablets are OK if you just treat them as a new device and not a replacement for your other devices.

As a purchase, if youve already got a desktop/decent laptop and a smartphone, then they arent too bad. If you dont own those I'd get them first.

I have a Kindle and a smartphone. I don't see the need for a tablet.

It's not really a "need", a lot of today's smartphones have plenty of power to run apps and games, a "4 screen though is too tiny (IMO) for a decent gaming experience..

That's my problem with tablets. According to the marketing, they'll replace laptops, desktop computers, TVs and pretty much everything else. Microsoft is forcing a touch/tablet UI on to desktop users, because it's "the future" and we'll just have to get used to it. Apple is doing the same to OSX, but at least it's more subtle and elegant. What they don't seem to understand is that people will still want a 24" display and a 42" TV.

Also, while touch is "cool", it's actually not the best interface in many situations. The big advantage is gestures and swipes that you can't do with a mouse, but there are many disadvantages. Your fingers are too fat for any kind of precision, which is why everything has to be *huge*. Compare this to the mouse - a good, high-DPI mouse gives you 1-pixel accuracy.

It will never work with a large display because it's not scalable like a mouse - you can use the same size mouse pad regardless of whether you're working with a 12" screen or a 27" one. This is not true with touch - if you're working with multiple, large displays, it's would be totally ridiculous to use touch because you'd have to move your arms so much in order to reach everywhere on the displays.

Who doesn't own a laptop/desktop and a smartphone? No one I know in real life, maybe people here who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.

It's a targeted insult, not random.

You will be assimilated. The iPad was launched and did insanely well during some of the worst economic times in recent years, now that the economy is picking up, sales will increase.

 Fair enough then.

Thats still nothing to do with what the OP was talking about. Just because it sells well dosnt mean the OP is going to find it useful. There are lots of condoms sold every year but they are pretty useless to a lot of ATOT as well. :D

I've always preferred gelcaps over tablets. Tablets can get caught in my throat and tend to be chalky as most are not coated. That's disgusting! D:

I'd buy one if they weren't so damned expensive. Just can't see spending $400-500 on one of these things personally. $200-250? Definitely.

Agreed. Got a fire sale 32gb touchpad for about 170 after shipping and tax. it is great for that price.

Yeah, the demographics data indicates most iPad purchasers are making ~$75K+ and have college degrees.

Interesting when you compare that to who says they have no use for a tablet here.

Manufacturers would kill for a strong customer base with that much cash.

You say that like it's a bad thing :) I carry my iPod Touch at work every day, damn thing is slightly bigger than a credit card and I can trade stocks on it.

It's not a bad thing. iPod Touch is brilliant device. The size and form factor is amazing and the low price makes it the perfect device to introduce iOS and Apple ecosystem to the masses. I gave 3 as Christmas gifts to my nephew and nieces, ages 5-11. Now they all FaceTime daily with my 9yr daughter who has her own. Two of my nieces live half way around the world. I didn't have to explain or teach them anything. I don't have to provide tech support. That's the beauty of Apple and why they will ultimately win.

I'd love a tablet, but I can't justify the cost for something that I'm only going to use to read on the couch or in bed with. If I traveled a lot, I'd definitely buy one.

Demographics data are pretty useless and full of BS. Over 50 million iPad sold so far around the world. You're telling me most of these buyers are making $75k+ with college degrees?

That's the thing about statistics. If 5 buyers buy your device, four making $35k/year, and one making $500k/year, what is the "average" buyer for your device?

I wouldn't use an Ipad if it were given to me. I'd sell it, and buy a cheap tablet and netbook just like I have now. I'd also likely have money left over for dinner, or some other kind of gadget that's actually useful.

People will check any box they want. It's like asking about income here. Virtually everyone will claim $100k+ a year and have PhD. So ATOT poster > Apple buyer

Sorry, meant $100,000

Seems the poor and uneducated don't have tablets :)

You can actually pretty accurately figure out someone's income by determining if they have an iPad :)

Just about everyone I know that makes >$100K has one.

I know plenty of people who are poor as hell and have an iPhone and iPad.

I'm proud for you. You've obviously gone to college and have heard of the bell shaped curve?

What's your degree in? I'd guess it's not math, statistics, marketing, anything that requires critical thinking or math skills right?

I'd not know how to use it. I'd get a smartphone before that. If I have a smartphone, what do I need the tablet for?
for taking notes a real keyboard and laptop is just better.

I don't think I agree with this yet. Ask me again in two years. It took a massive marketing campaign by Verizon and over two years from the release of the OG iPhone before Android started making headway in the US market. I don't know if the stars will align again on the tablet side, but it's still possible.

But if we start rounding the bases in to 2015 and the market hasn't dramatically shifted...

Tablets are mainly a way to fill the void for when you don't have something to do or somewhere to go.

However - they are excellent devices to use for educational purposes and kids LOVE them.

The Apple perma bulls are fans of this theory, not sure if I'd bet the farm on it.

Android tablet manufacturers are going to have a hard time with pricing their offerings, no one has been particularly successful yet outside of the Kindle Fire and the nook tablet/color, and they're a far cry from a full featured tablet.
