what's with all the acronyms? :'(

rst = retail sales tax?

man sitting here at work for the last 3 hours not having much to do bores me out of my mind. I'm getting stupider by the minute.
No, RST is the reset flag in the TCP protocol.

My 9 year old is Autistic, and she is on the very end of the server end of the spectrum. She is non communicative, in diapers, unable to care for herself in any fashion, unable to feed herself with utensils.
Essentially she is in her own world where nothing else matters. Only a few things can bring her somewhat out of that world and capture her attention. Elmo, Barney, and Teletubbies. She will watch those till the end of time if you let her.
All we can do is make sure she is as happy as she can be. We are already speaking with doctors about the possibility of sterilization and removal of her uterus to prevent menstration.
If you think you have it bad, suck it up and realize that your life is a lot better than others that deal with Autism.

Dude (or Chick) there are days where she can stress me to the max. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've had to clean poop off of the walls in her room.

Oh, and the only way she will go to bed without being up for 3 days is if we give her melatonin before bed time as she does not produce enough of it to regulate a normal sleep cycle.

Dude, you're more man than I could ever be. There is NO WAY I could deal with what you're going through.

My wife & I have discussed this on occasion when we watch a show that features an autistic child...she knows I'd have probably bailed early. I just don't have the patience nor fortitude to deal with such a child. Hell, I could barely deal with our "normal" children.

I've never seen any kind of head doc...but I'm the strangest person I know.

Take your pick:
-Aspbergers
-Autism
-OCD
-ADD

I'm sure it's one or more of the above. I know that OCD and ADD seem to conflict, but I can't really describe how I seem to be afflicted by both.

OCD & ADD. Is that like a sloppy perfectionist? 😵

No doubt. I am scared as hell to have kids because I don't know if I could handle it if they had complications like that. My wife being 31 has to increase the odds of something going wrong

In my launch period there is an autistic kid. The other day he stood up and spit food across a few tables at a guy. Yay keyblade master.

always suspected I might have a mild form of it. but I think I'm just rather introverted and uninterested in people.

everybody has a disease now a days. I bet every single person on the planet could be diagnosed with some sort of mental illness.

First - mad props for having the patient and love for your daughter.

I spent two summers working at a school for autistic children. I had no problem working with them (a few even asked where I went during the school year, they were awesome) but it can be really taxing if you don't know how to deal with them. One kid would get really violent sporadically and the only thing that I found that would calm him down (other than his parents) was a puzzle he loved. Our really good family friend has an autistic daughter who's gotta be like 40+ now. Her daughter is obviously autistic, but some of the kids at the school where I worked, you wouldn't really know unless you were acutely aware of the symptoms. Many people are blaming the crazy vaccine scare to the increase in autism, but none refer to the increased awareness and broadening of the diagnosis.

Asperger's is in the Autism spectrum, i.e., it is a form of autism. Most say it is a mild form of it. More clinical term for both would be "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (ASD).

Some ASD people exhibit OCD behavior. From what I've seen most who do are more heavily afflicted, therefore people who identify as Asperger's tend not to show OCD as much.

ADD symptoms are pretty much present in ASD people. But, ASD people tend to be able to hyper-focus on subjects they are interested in (or some would say obsessed with).

My theory is that ADHD is not a separate thing, that these people are also on the ASD spectrum.

My 21-yr-old son is autistic. He's married, has a job, and is in school majoring in accounting. He's weird, but has learned to function in his very limited little world.

Here's the proposed changes to the new version of the APA Diagnostic manual http://www.dsm5.org (to find autism and ADHD, click on Proposed Revisions at the top, and then click on Disorders First Diagnosed in Infancy, Childhood or Adolescence and scroll down - autism is last)

The proposed new diagnostic manual will eliminate Asberger's as a diagnosis and include the more severe asperger's people under autism.

There's been much talk during the revision about ADHD and autism. They talked seriously about making a category that was both ADHD and autistic. But they decided not to, basically because autism behavior includes stuff that looks like ADHD. If it's ADHD plus autism, then the autism diagnosis fits.

Remember, technically it's not ADD any more - it's ADHD, which can be Inattentive, Hyperactive-Impulsive, or both. The last time ADD was in the diagnostic manual was in the DSM-3, I think.

I've been Autistic all my life. I'm able to speak and learn quite well but it makes me a boring person with nothing to say. I also suffer from depression and paranoia.

I hope this doesn't sound patronizing but I actually find people with Austism to be fascinating. So much going on inside and so little expression of it outside. I'm always interested in understanding how other people perceive and experience the world, and autism and other similar disorders seem to produce such a different experience.

To echo the question of others, are you diagnosed autistic? How independent are you in general? How old are you? Do you live alone or with others? What do you do for school/work or are you supported by government/parents? What do you think of others when you watch them interact? What do you think of their conversations and interests?

First, a huge amount of respect to those with loved ones afflicted.

Second, most people who 'think' they have some sort of disorder are just normal people looking for something to make themselves feel special or give them a reason/excuse for the way things are. A very large majority of internet dwellers fit the bill for at least fair array of disorder symptoms simply by nature.

common misdiagnosis = add and ocd in the same person. typically, it's a bipolar disorder.
