I haven't done more then $60 - but I have a credit/debit card through USAA. I don't know if they limit the pump amount.

My truck has a 20 gallon tank and I get about 210-220mpt city.

I've seen limits for debit cards but not for credit cards.

I've run into that - $50 for debit or $75 for credit. My truck is at around $60 for a fill up, so naturally I choose credit now. It is a huge PIA though.

If I check my online account info right after I go get gas, there's a $75 pre-authorization. It never lasts more than an hour and if my account goes into overdraft, there are never charges.

Called my CC company and they said VISA has a $75 limit, and Mastercard has a $50 limit for pay at the pump purchases???

It takes ~$90 to fill up my truck :(

My MasterCard will cut off at $75.00. I found this out when I was moving across country and had to fill the moving truck up with gas. I had to restart the pump to finish filling up.

Haven't had this problem yet. My van has a 32 gallon tank so it's not uncommon for me to pass $75.

BTW, you would think they would raise this number as gas prices have gone up. I mean how many full sized SUV's out there can fill up for less than $75?

What should he be commuting in?

What if the guy depends on his truck for his living? Is he supposed to stop driving it because he has to use it to commute?

Get off your high horse.

I don't think I've been much over $45 on a fillup. Around here, as mentioned above, I have to enter my ZIP Code before pumping.

This is standard practice to protect themselves and possibly reduce fraud charges incase the card is stolen. They might be using this data to factor towards determining if fraud charges are being made. As in, if you always fill up less than $50 of gas, but they find that in another state, someone fills up $100 of gas, that could set off some kind off alert, maybe not alone, but with something else it could be useful.

CC companies have valid reasons for just about everything they do, it's a very well thought out system.

I know for a fact that Mastercard's limit is at least $72. That's the most I've ever filled up my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with (21 gallons and change at the absurdly high gas prices in southern California this past summer).

wow, $90 is a lot of money. how often do you have to fill?

I decided a while ago to walk places more, and haven't had to fill up my car for 2 months :) (obviously not everyone is in a position to do that, but still semi proud of myself)
But either way the highest I've seen to fill up my car was about $45. I don't know how one could stomach dropping $90 on a tank of gas.

i fill up to the tune of $35 per tank (14gallon tank) every 4-5 days.

4-5 days, huh? I fill up my 14 gallon tank every 2 weeks!

Yep, & I'm on call a lot, rain shine, sleet or snow. Having a truck is pretty damn convenient, virtually all of us (including the women) own 4WD's, SUV's etc so we can get to work in a timely manner when there's bad weather, when we're called, we have 1/2 hour to get to work, sometimes 15 minutes when the shit hits the fan...

I drive a Miata most of the time, I don't have to have a truck, but since I drive older vehicles, I like having a back up vehicle, and one that can literally haul a ton of bricks, or a load of branches is handy as hell... The 30% boost in mpg being a diesel and the history of longevity of the 7.3L engine are big pluses too...

It's sort of funny, in the Miata, I'm looking at car's undercarriages, in the truck, I'm looking at their roofs. :D

I always use my MC debit card as a credit card, some places have a $65 limit, others $75. It's a PITA to stop, hang up the nozzle, and start over again for that last couple gallons to top it off.

When prices hit $4/gal or so, a lot of people will be complaiining.

If this is by CC rather than gas station (which I doubt) then Discover limits you to $75 as well. However at different gas stations I've been able charge more than $75 so YMMV ;) .

Probably due to CC theft.

That's where stolen CC's usually go first - pay at pump stations.

My thoughts exactly. Someone can steal your credit card, use it at a Walmart to buy some gas cans, then go to a gas station and clean you out without ever having to sign anything.

Next, off to the Home Depot's self-checkout lanes, where your card will also never be seen by another human being.

It's been $50 here for a while. You gotta fill, hang up, complete transaction then do it all again till you top off.

Those darn college kids. They will stand at a pump and get people to pay them cash for the gas and run up mommy's cards.

Just got back from the Mobil station, put $75.22 on my MC debit card. My guess is the station set the limit, not the card companies.
