Anyone else have a $75 limit for "Pay at the Pump" charges?

I'm trying to fill up my truck today and the pump shut off at $75.

Asked the clerk inside, she says she's never seen it before.

Called my CC company and they said VISA has a $75 limit, and Mastercard has a $50 limit for pay at the pump purchases???

It takes ~$90 to fill up my truck :(

Must be just you. :) I have the world's worst credit and I've never had that happening when filling up my truck.

Since they only initially authorize $1, I wonder if they have been burned by people with near maxxed out cards, who go over limit, then the station can't put the rest of the charge thru?

The one time I came across it I was able to hang up the pump and reuse the exact same credit card to turn it back on and finish my fill up. Seemed like it kinda defeated the point.

wow, $90 is a lot of money. how often do you have to fill?

I decided a while ago to walk places more, and haven't had to fill up my car for 2 months :) (obviously not everyone is in a position to do that, but still semi proud of myself)
But either way the highest I've seen to fill up my car was about $45. I don't know how one could stomach dropping $90 on a tank of gas.

i fill up to the tune of $35 per tank (14gallon tank) every 4-5 days.

It's a Visa and Mastercard thing-- although your issuing bank can be even more stringent.

It's a PITA filling up a boat as well. Here it's because of fraud...first thing many do with a found/stolen CC is load up gas.

Yep, gas pumps are are one of the few places that don't require a signature for any sized CC transaction. Of course here in the SW they ask for your billing zip code to try to thwart fraud. If I had to spend more than $75 to fill up my car I'd buy something more fuel efficient (last fill-up I spent $45).

I drove from Arizona to Minnesota with a rental truck and trailer, and every single gas station i stopped at did this. All you have to do is turn off the pump, put your card back in (same card) and continue until full. Most of the stations i was at had the notice posted on the pump that Visa is 75 and MC is 50.

20mpg isn't bad for a large truck (assuming you have an F2/350, RAM 2500, etc.)

Yep, I had a V6 F150 manual that got worse mileage, my F250 is a hell of a lot more truck and gets better mpg...

That's just what they pre-authorize it for... You can just put your card in and start pumping again. I've done it before.

If they had a higher limit, people would be bitching that the gas pump pre-authorized $150 when they only spent $10 on gas.

I have looked several times at my credit card's website after buying gas and immediately see nothing but an authorization for $1. It's a couple days later when the actual charge get's posted. I've never seen an authorization for $50, $75, or more. I've never had my available credit immediately reduced by more.
