Why? All I said was basically that I agreed that unless you're faster than a speeding bullet (pun intended), you don't have a chance if someone else has already drawn on you...

And if someone does have a bead on you and demands your wallet, I'd say the odds are about 1:4 of getting your shot off first before he realizes that it wasn't your wallet you pulled out from behind you. Which is a hell of a lot better odds than you trying to squirt some mace in his eye at 10ft or run up and judo chop his ass. Fvcking karate kid asshole.

Okay, okay, I'll tone down the hostility. But the point is, if you know someone is going to pull out a piece already and you're too far away to react, why the fvck would you stand around? Personally, even if I had a gun, I'd run away before he pulls out anything - and by the way, if you don't anything about the subject, pleae shut your mouth. There are very easy techniques (even for people of questionable intelligence *cough**cough*) to disarm someone if you're only 10 ft. away if they didn't do anything yet and in no way does it include kicking anyone anywhere.

I really, really want to tell you how I feel, as I've hosted self defense seminars and such (like I said, having a gun is not necessarily a BAD thing - but it's far from being the best in a hostile situation), but like I said, I'll be civil about this, and that is all I'm going to say about the subject.

And all of them require you to get CLOSER to the guy trying to shoot you, which is a bad idea in itself. Look, from 10 feet away, there is no way on God's green earth you can move fast enough to disarm somebody if they know aything at all about handling a gun and are willing to shoot your ass, even if they still have to take the time to draw & aim it.

Well it happened to me one time. The guy was drunk, came at me with a knife in a parking lot of a truck-stop. It happened quickly, so I didn't have much time to react. First-off he thought I was someone else, so I was almost an innocent victim. I couldn't run...he was too close. I had just got out of a friend's car...passenger side. I was unarmed....no knife, no gun.

Well when he was right on me I grabbed his arm, twisted his wrist till he dropped the knife, and kept twisting till he hit the ground. I picked up his knife and cursed him out....after listening to his story, finding out he was drunk and I was the wrong person, and that he was a pathetic POS, I turned to get back in my friend's car. Now the POS wants his knife back. Ha! I walked over to the fence by the highway and threw it across three lanes into the median.

I learned a few lessons here....My friend had stayed in the car the whole time this was going on. Said he got scared and didn't know what to do. I never did anything with this guy ever again...some friend.
From that time forward I am almost always armed....I am not going to face anyone ever again who wants to kill me, who wants to rob me, without self-protection in the form of a knife or gun. There are too many sad stories, sad statistics out there. If I go down, it's going to be with a fighting chance.

And to you wimps who are against guns....how would you have reacted? I was big enough to defend myself against an armed attacker. What if I had been a little guy? What if I had been too old or too slow? You want to die like this? I don't.

So you're calling me a wimp for not carrying something that could potentially turn against my loved ones? I call YOU a wimp for resorting to such a wuss option of carrying a weapon instead of learning how to defend yourself without carrying a weapon. You, my friend, are a weakling *ussy. And one more thing - "little guy, too old or too slow" even if you have a weapon, if you're "too slow" you lose. And I know plenty of martial arts masters well into their 70's who can kick your ass (and mine, admittedly) without hesitation. Don't be a stupid idiot and presume things, coward.

Turn against your loved ones? Your talking like the weapon has a complete mind of it's own. How about if you own a firearm in the house, you EDUCATE your family on it's use, safety, storage. If your children know the dangers and know how to operate one correctly, there's less likelyhood that they will grab it, stare down the barrel and play with the trigger. Education is the key, you don't keep people in the dark and hope it all goes away. You teach them, and that is the best deterrent to a gun death. My father and my uncles learned to shoot when they were extremely young. They lived on a farm and they hunted all of their lives and they were around firearms all of their lives. Was their one incident or one death out of all of this? No. You take the mysticism away from the weapon and show it as a tool, then your less likely to have an incident.

Some pretty good stories in this thread.....but remember, we're the ones alive to tell the stories. There are plenty of people who cannot tell their stories because they weren't so lucky, or so prepared.

Jehovah seems to think he can defend himself using Kung Fu...or whatever. Well maybe he can in many situations, but not all. If you think your Kung Fu can protect your life in all situations, you've been watching too many movies. Being armed cannot protect you in every situation either, but it does at least give you a chance. And when you protect yourself, you are also protecting your family.

I guess the best way to protect your life is to avoid bad situations, bad places, bad people. But it's not always possible. Old Boy Scout motto I took to heart: "Be Prepared".

I worked in a small grocery store in a small town, just me and someone else by ourselves. This guy came in, went back to the meat department and stacked up like a 3 foot pile of steaks in his hands, and just headed out the front door. I ran after him and yelled for him to stop. He stopped, turned around and pulled this HUGE butcher knife out of his pants. I was like, "Hey bro, have fun grillin out on the barbeque! Seeya!".

I wasn't gonna die for $200 worth of steak.

Then another guy came in a week later and stuffed rolls of sausage down his pants, then tried to walk out. The girl at the cash register locked the front door, and he came up behind her and grabbed her around the throat and started strangeling her, so I came up behind him and put him in a choke hold and held him there until the cops came.

People are crazy over meat. What's up with that. After I had him in the choker he starts unzipping his pants, like "Here's the sausage back! I don't want it! Let me go!"... lol

At least nobody got hurt...

Well said.

For those of you that think carring a gun is going to protect you against a person with a knife, you better be at LEAST 40 feet away from them the entire time. A person not afraid of a knife is a person that hasn't been stabbed by one. By the time you get your pistol rasied to take aim, the perp is already on top of you with a minimum of two jabs to a critcal organ. You might have shot him once, but now your fighting for your life. Don't get sucked into a false sence of security just because your "packing the heat." I have over 12 years in law enforcement, and that kind of thinking will get you killed.
Just as it was said above, know your surroundings and BE PREPARED. Always give yourself a out incase you have to run for your life.

Yup, you can never be too careful. The garbage can on the street could be a terrorist bomb. Grandma could be a wolf. Just be careful guys. Keep an eye over your shoulder. Nothing's perfect, but do your best. Read the Bible and your Boyscout Manuel. They are full of practical advise on how to get through life with a minimum of physical and emotional scarring.

And don't forget, even your buddy can let you down, even the guy who brings you all this good advise. Yup, I could be some kind of spider with a sticky web. BE CAREFUL! Know who I am before you put your trust in me. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA! It isn't just people with guns we gotta watch out for.

Moonie....this town I live in (St Louis) has a population of about 350k. Basically a small mid-western town, compared to the really big cities. For the last twenty years or so, there have been between 150 to 300 murders here every year. Now you can close your eyes and pretend it doesn't happen (like you do), or you can face the reality of the situation, and deal with it.

I'm not about to stop living my life and give into fear. And I'm not going to walk blindly about pretending nothing bad will happen, because it does...frequently. And I certainly cannot understand why you object to some people being prepared to fight back when threatened. It looks like you wouldn't......but many of us don't share those fatalistic views.

Tell you what, since you are so confident about your safety, come to St Louis and take a late night stroll down MLKing drive (used to be called Easton avenue). See what happens.....

You disarm people with holstered guns? May I inquire why?

Very true. But, if you have sufficient training, the person attacking you with a knife better be prepared. Someone with a lot of training is far more dangerous then some punk on the street with a knife. Its true though that some people living in a fantasy world think they are invincible, but one thing I was taught from the start was; the gun will always win.
