It might just be me but I grew up in NYC and it seems like you can get away with hoping in a cab or a train when you drink. I told myself I wouldn't drink and drive when I moved to upstate ny but you can't really get anywhere without driving. Seemed like drunk driving was a sport up there. But I guess there's way less traffic and a lot less people to injure in more rural areas.

zero tolerance everywhere around here, nomatter how old you are. If you're under 40, the cops will even bang your head on the cruiser as they shove you in. I too take zero chance for DUI and refuse to drive within 6-8 hours of my last drink (and even longer if I don't spend that whole time sleeping) regardless of quantity.

To those of you thinking that 2-3 beers are ok before you get to .08, you have another thing coming.

DUI starts at .08, but you can be considered "impaired" at the lower level of .06

Penalties vary from one municipality to another.

Typical penalties for Impaired:

• Fines($2000)
  Probation
  Weekend sequestered at driver intervention($300)
  Restricted license for 90 days(don't try to rent a car)
  Mandatory drug/alcohol counseling($1200)
  Even though the state will only give you 4 points on your record your insurance company will give you 8 points.
