I grew up staunchly Republican, but I had spent my entire adult life as a registered Independent.

This year, I changed my registration to Democrat, in order to keep in clear focus that we cannot endure, and I will not abet, another 4 years of the last 8.

To seriously answer the question, I've never really thought of myself as belonging to any party, I just vote based on who i think will do the best job based upon what I believe and where I am in my life.

Officially I've never been a registered member of a party, but I used to be something close to a Green. After a while, I started seriously looking at things and realized that I was just believing what other people said and not really coming up with my own ideas.

I started looking and slowly I've become what I am now, a fiscal/resource conservative and a social moderate-liberal.

I'm another Republican->Libertarian switcher. I voted for Bush in the last election SOLELY because he promised to privatize Social Security (my personal hot button, don't get me started). After he fucked us over on that one, I was officially done with him and Republicans in general. I haven't decided who I will be voting for this time, because I'm not a big Bob Barr fan either.

Democrat, but my views are a little of both - some liberal, and some true conservative, not the Neo-Con crap that's in style right now. Mostly liberal social values, and a mix of both for the economy. I don't blindly favor small government - I favor efficient government, something which is not likely to happen anytime soon. Any candidate who would propose to "trim the fat" from the government would be accused by opponents of fostering unemployment, and of hating the middle class.

As often seems to be the case with politicians, I tend to vote for the person whom I feel will screw us over more gently than the other.

All the time. PA is a closed-primary state, so I switch from Independent to whatever party's primary holds the most interest whenever there's a primary worth voting in (there usually isn't).

I've been a Democrat since I was old enough to vote, (1971, after the passage of the 26th amendment.) and I cast my first vote in 1972. I had such a strong dislike for McGovern, (WAAAAY too liberal) that I didn't even vote for the presidency at all. I COULDN'T vote for Nixon...he WAS a crook, in spite of his denials.
Since then, I've voted FOR Carter, AGAINST Reagan twice, AGAINST Bush41, FOR Clinton twice, AGAINST BushCo2 twice, and I don't know how I'll vote in November.

It sucks when the candidates you're offered leave you only the option of voting for the one you dislike the least...or for voting AGAINST the other candidate, even though you dislike "your party's candidate" ALMOST as much.

I keep hoping the Dems will get their heads out of their asses, quit sucking up to the far-left "loonie-libs" and offer those of us who are more centrist a decent candidate to vote FOR again.
