What's that yellow cucumbery/pickled thing that usually comes with rice at any halfway decent sushi place? That stuff is soooooo good.

I was shopping for one in an asian supermarket and was amazed at their prices.

Dude, I have a cheap ($40) rice cooker from Target and it still does a nice job.

yeah but do they have the neat little features? such as not burning the rice. or keeping it good for most of the day?

Of course not, but I didn't it expect it to.

I never meant to imply that one should buy a $40 cooker and nothing else, but that decently cooked rice can still be had for $40. EvilYoda said "don't skimp out and buy a cheap one" but if someone doesn't need all those features for another $100+, they most likely don't need to spend the money.

All it has is a teflon coated bowl, and it keeps the rice warm after it is cooked. I've never had an issue with it.

Some of my asian coworkers commented the other day at lunch their disappointment in being continually served bread as opposed to rice. I find rice a little bland, but cheap and good when mixed in a meal. Still, I prefer the good ole potato, the white man's carb.

Potatoes are MUCH more nutritious than rice, FYI.

Then why do rice eaters live longer than potato eaters?

Could it have to do with the massive culture differences between Asians and Westerners?

I think it also has to do with the fact that the potato eaters also discovered whisky and vodka as compared to rice wine.

My speciality for pot-luks is "Devil's Rice." I take a nice rice mix and then stir fry vegies and a habanero pepper and mix it all together. It gets really spicy, whichis totally unexpected because rice usually quells spice

I would like one. just need something to keep the rice warm/fresh for about 2 hours. i eat kinda slow but would also like it kinda fresh for a snack latter.

also heard many of them tend to burn the rice. i cant afford to burn rice! its way to expensive! heh

I like rice, but I can't eat much because I'm borderline diabetic.

I don't know if I could eat it with every meal though, I think I'd get tired of it pretty quickly. (BTW, i'm not asian.)

yep. for me a proper chinese meal is like 70% rice in volume. of course I don't have that requirement for western food (which I don't eat as a meal often)

Mine doesn't burn rice. Not sure I would trust it to keep the rice "fresh" for up to two hours, but I suppose it would as long as you used enough water to begin with, and mixed it around a bit after it was done.

Yes, most have a thermostat that prevents them from getting too hot and burning the rice. And after the "cook" cycle is done, it sets it on a "keep warm" cycle.

Mine was cheap, about $30, and made in China. But then again the Chinese should know how to make a rice cooker.

I never eat the white rice that comes with japanese or chinese food. Everytime I eat lunch with my asian coworkers, they're like "Aren't you eating your rice???!" Like I'm some kind of freak.

I'm Haitian (which kinda sounds like Asian), and there are plenty of things that I like to eat with rice.

Fortunately, I don't feel compelled to eat rice with every meal. I'm fairly close... but not yet.

well yea u are some kinda freak;) its like eating spagetti sauce plain. asian food esp restaurant stuff is made to be eaten with rice, its seasoned enough that your rice will become flavored by the sauce or whatever. kinda salty eating plates of dishes plain. sorta like eating gobs of luncheon meat without bread. complimentary tastes.

but as for the have to eat rice with every meal yea parents would joke us kids didn't have that thing anymore because we were too westernised heh

usually love rice, but not required (mexican) usually beans are required with almost every mexican meal, but what i do cross over to all types of cuisine is "salsa" spicy stuff on everything from pizza/burger/steak/eggs/ you name it if it's salty put salsa(or some sort of pepper) in it, even if it's not!!! like watermelon/mango/apples/oranges/grapes/ that is what i have to deal with...making everything spicy!

Eating rice is like an amercian ordering potatoes of some kind with every meal.
Potato Chips
Fried Potatoes
Tater Tots
Mashed potatoes
Potato Pancakes
Julianed potatoes
potatoe wedges
Sweet potatoe pie
Hmm....

So if you eat a potatoe with the Steak does that mean the steak is lousy?
