I am not asian, and I like rice. Not quite every meal, but probably as often as potatoes, and more often than pasta. Rice > Pasta IMO.

I was lucky enough to have a mom who cooked traditional Chinese fare 4 out of 5 weekdays and usually made something non-Chinese or took us out. On the weekends, we usually went to a family friend's house at least once so that was up in the air.

Rice is a comfort food of sorts for me, but I don't absolutely need to have it.

I love rice. i have it maybe 3-6 times a week. plain white rice goes with any meat i have tried.

heck sometimes i make up a cup of rice and some easy sauce and eat it like that. yumm. if it was'nt such a pain to make i would make it every day.

also gets hard after about an hour.

Rice pretty much goes good with anything.

Steak though, is fine with potatoes/vegtables/steak fries.

... but rice would make it better.

It just balances everything out. You can eat (almost) ANYTHING with rice.

HeroOfPellinor, it would still be 99%... I hardly ever eat cereal. Breakfast is sauteed eggs on rice w/soy sauce.

That was actually a pathetic euphemism for my penis. :(

As for a rice cooker, they are so worth it, but don't skimp out and buy a cheap one. Either go to a Chinatown or ask people who already have one. yay for fuzzy logic.

Potatoes are MUCH more nutritious than rice, FYI.

Then why do rice eaters live longer than potato eaters?

because we also eat dog and 17 thousand year old crab and lobsters that have claws bigger than your entire b0dy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rice FTW!!@%%

I just need something to balance it out. The mashed potatoes or baked will do it with a steak.

I can eat just meat as long as its not too salty or strong. I just need the rice when I need it to balance out something. In my experience, thats why a lot of older asians never cook other ethnic foods at home. They'll follow a recipe meant to eat alone, then think its all bland when they eat it with rice.

Damn, I can't imagine cleaning pots and pans for every freaking meal. Are you lactose intolerant.

I like rice too, but a large part of my diet is cereals, sandwiches and pastas. Partly because they're wholesome and hearty, but also because they're quicker and less cleanup.

That said, I'll probably be making stir-fry tonight with some New York Strip and serving it over white rice.

How many rice eaters here have a $200+ rice cooker?

I was shopping for one in an asian supermarket and was amazed at their prices.

Could it have to do with the massive culture differences between Asians and Westerners?

Brown rice is has lots of vitamins and minerals http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c21U3.html

But unenriched white rice has little vitamins, although there is a lot of manganese. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c21Vr.html

Compare to a potato with skin

Bought it at Costco. Yeah it's a little more expensive, but the flavor is worth it.

I don't feel the need to eat rice, but really don't mind if I do have to eat it every meal. Then again, I have grain/staple fetish; can't get enough of bread, potatos and rice all in one meal:).

Nah, I still drink like 4-5 glasses of milk a day. Eggs, soy sauce, & rice makes for a damn good breakfast though, beats cereal by far if you can wake up just a bit earlier to make it.

Cleanup isnt that bad either... I wash bowls/plates/whatever I eat off of right after I finish eating, and clean all the stuff I used to cook things in later at night.

Dude, I have a cheap ($40) rice cooker from Target and it still does a nice job.
