still hangin' tough; has been interesting to watch how the board has progressed. Still remember jumping from Tom's site to here and thinking that it was pretty good find. Kudos to Anand for nudging and pushing it along though I think too many people take for granted all the work he puts into this.

Daniel -- << What ever happened to that one user... I think it was Carolyn? >>

Caroylyn's was the only independent small claims action I know of that Buy.com tried to fight in court, and the judge handed them their lunch. After that, everyone I knew who actually dropped legal paper on their desk was offered a settlement.

The settlement included an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) that they would not disclose the terms of the settlement. A friend, who is also my attorney, ordered his monitor and mine on his card, so I was not officially a party to his settlement deal, and I am not subject to the NDA he signed. :)

Those who chose to join the class action suit also won, but it took a long time (over a year, I think), and you can be sure the attorneys took their share of the settlement. In that action, the judge was none to impressed with Buy.com's behavior, either. Since then, they have gotten new management, and, hopefully, figured out a more ethical business model.

<< One for the road! >>

You da man Ornery! I used to post that pic in the old days when we could still do pics. Brought many a thread back to life with that one. Thanks! I lost all my pics in a drive meltdown and hadn't been able to find that one again.

Doesn't bother me to get mixed up with kranky, he's a good egg, one of the best! ;)

Can't believe Red took that "Red Barn" thing so well. Once upon a time, back in the beginning, I mistakenly assumed Red Dawn was a woman! I imagined in my mind that I was bantering with a gal that looked like this! Imagine my disappointment! :Q

Remember Red's Masterpiece?
  • The Tale Of Off Topic Forum
    By Red Dawn

Yea oh ye children of Anand. gather thee around while I tell a tale of how your beloved Forum, the one that we all know as Offtopics, came to be.

Before there was the lost Tribe of the treacherous Coupon Coders, who are known in the house of Anand as the Ingrates, and their fathers before them who are still known as the Wounded Monitor Children, Anand in all whose youthful wisdom created a Hardware Universe known as Anandtech and it was good. Looking around Anand saw that he had beget many followers who came to be like children to him. So Anand in all his youthful wisdom created a great house for his children so they may discuss great things such as Nvidia vs. 3Dfx and Intel vs. AMD, and named it the General Hardware Forum and it was good. So it was for Eons and Eons, all of Anand's happy children played and frolicked in Anand?s Great Universe and the great house Anand built for his children and Anand was pleased and he did then rest.

Alas, not all was right in the house of Anand. Unbeknownst to Anand there was a great disturbance brewing. About this time, the Great Arch Liberal Harvey arrived at the Great House of Anand. Though he had been one of the Elders there, he had been away fighting the Great Teuton, Thomas of Pabst. Upon his arrival, The Great Arch Liberal Harvey noticed one who was no child of Anand. Nay, it was the child of Christ who was known as Fish, come to the Great House of Anand to spread the gospel of his savior. The Great Arch Liberal Harvey also noticed that there were one or 2 others like the one they called Fish, among them a mountain of a mere mortal who was known as Netopia. At once the Great Arch Liberal Harvey went to slay this one known as Netopia but found that this mountain of a mere mortal possessed strength that matched that of the Great Arch Liberal himself. Having just battled Thomas of Pabst to a stalemate while inflicting deep wounds upon the Teutonic Twit?s heavenly Ego, the Great Arch Liberal Harvey was full of confidence and truly believed that no mere mortal would be able to suffer his mighty blows. He soon found he was mistaken.

The battle between the mountainous mere mortal of a man Netopia and the Arch Liberal Harvey raged for 40 days and 40 nights, with many children of Anand allying themselves with either the Great Arch Liberal or with the mountainous mere mortal of a man, Netopia, who by now had won many supporters with his show of courage and strength. Never before had it been believed that a mere mortal would be able to stand up to the Great Arch Liberal Harvey. Thunderous upon thunderous blows were landed by both combatants yet there still seem to be no victor in sight. It seemed that the Great house of Anand was doomed.

Meanwhile Anand in all his great youthful wisdom had been out shopping for a new BMW Roadster and had not been aware of the ferocious battle raging in the great house he built for his children. All of a sudden, Anand heard a great roar. When he looked to seek the cause of this great roar he saw his great house, which in all his wisdom he built for his children, had become a horrific battleground. He also saw the one named Fish preaching the word of his Lord, which seemed to fuel this horrific battle. Alas Anand was saddened. His children were in mortal combat with each other and the Great Arch Liberal who had won favor with Anand seemed powerless to do anything about it. Anand, with wisdom beyond his youthful years, knew that unless he acted fast all would be lost in the Great House called General Hardware Forum. Anand pondered and pondered until he realized that he could build another great house so his warring children could be separated from each other.

With a voice that can only be described as that of Ron Howard?s, Anand commanded his children to stop fighting each other at once. Stunned, the children of Anand dropped their verbal swords and cowered. Anand then looked upon those of his children who cared not for their fellow Anandthech brethren and commanded that they leave the Great House called the General Hardware Forum. Of course being the loving and wise Hardware Master that his is, Anand told those whom he had banished from the Great House called the General Hardware Forum to follow the Great Arch Liberal Harvey to a new promised land, to the Great House Called Non Hardware General Forum, which we know today as Offtopic. Of course along with the Great Arch Liberal Harvey, the mountainous mere mortal of a man Netopia and the one known as fish were ordered to abandon the Great house called General forum as well and were forced into exile at the Great House called Non General Hardware Forum. Others who also were banished were NWM, now known as Jenni the Manshe, the evil Troll H8tank, Russell of Compucheap, though it is rumored he just went there looking for chicks, and yours truly, Red Dawn. Others did follow. The one called Hippy, Rio of Rebel, the aptly named Ornery and though nobody remembers him yet he claims he was there, etech the Anal, probably known as something else at the time.

This oh ye children of Anand?s second great house, now known as the Offtopic, is how this Forum in which we break bread and balls amongst other things, came about.

I remember most of these things. But not all. But when I started coming here I had about 100 posts before the new fuestalk and because of this site I built my first computer. So I guess I could have known about Anandtech.com for about 3 1/2 years now.

To see some of the "OLD TIMERS" here brings back some old memories... Great to see you all again.

golfreak is the 13 year old pimp

Muwahaha. I recall that. I remember when I first got into AGN with my massive "PC133" ram sale. 'Course, I got screwed by my distributor and the ram was really el-cheapo cas 3 Pc 100. I had to calm alot (30+) of people down and issue mucho refunds but many many great trades later, I'm still here. :)

does anyone remember the $50 off $50 with free shipping Staples code? Or when coupon codes were still allowed in Hot Deals (pre fat-wallet days...)

Cheers ! :)

time !
:D

Oh and Staples... I could never forget all the goodies I got from there !!!

Yeah that was before Dealers were banned and in a sense I was a dealer. Anyway, the Forums are much better off without dealers. I still trade when I have the need but back then it seemed to be a full time occupation:)

I didn't register until Feb 2000, but I have been coming to these forums for about a year before that.
Yes, I remember the WMC and the many fiascos that arose around the use of the many coupon codes that were posted in hot deals:D

Who else remembers when Roger was just starting his troll hunting? Anyone remember who the first troll was to show up here on AT?
