The only reason why I would upgrade to the iPhone 5 is if it has a much better camera. The 4S is pretty good already.

Kind of early to say isn't it?

I would need a bigger screen and a more comfortable design to stick with the iPhone.

Yeah if you're on the S cycle, I don't think you really need to upgrade. There's not a significant difference between the 3GS and 4, hardware-wise. There likely won't be a significant hardware difference between the 4S and the 4GS (I'm sticking with that for now!).

I am, however, expecting LTE and NFC. Other than that, the 4S is getting all the features the 4GS likely has (except the screen increase).

There was a pretty significant difference between the 4 and the 4S though. Dual-core processor, significantly improved GFX, send and receive diversity on the antenna... If it had come out in the summer instead of early winter, I likely would have upgraded.

I just came in to post the exact same thing. I shoot upwards of 600 photos a week on my iPhone 4S; I really have a blast with it between the convenience (in my pocket at all times), speed (slide-to-shoot), and variety of editing apps. Here's a quick shot in NYC last week, out the car windshield:

Shot in the default Camera app, a quick color tweak in Camera+, and a nice little lens flare in the LensFlare app. Really fun to play with. Would definitely be interested in an even better camera!

I'm no photography expert but that sure doesn't look like a "show-off" picture to me.
I've seen much better pictures on the IP4s

I don't get it
does nobody want the 4" screen? That's going to be a very nice improvement

The 4" screen would be great had Apple kept their 3:2 screen ratio.
Lets face it, we hold our phone mostly in portrait mode so having a wider width vs a 16:9 ratio is a big plus.
I suspect that since Apple wanted to kept the ppi >300, they just added pixles to make the phone longer and nothing else.
Plus the phone is pretty much identical in design as the old IP4 which is 2 yrs old already.
Its a great looking design when it first came out but 2 yrs in the phone world is an eternity.

I wouldn't. The SGS3 and sgs2 are pretty different, I couldn't see anyone mistaking one for the other.
maybe the S1 and S2, but the S1 had more rounded edges... Both are rounded but the S2 feels more square.

I actually think the S2 is drop dead sexy. The S3 is arite. The button is stupid but good thing they realized that if it was a recessed button it could get stuck like on the HP TouchPad so they made it stick out. But maybe the S3's shape is necessary because its so big and on the verge of being non ergonomic.

Retina doesn't work that way.

Text size on the iPhone 1st gen is the same size as the iPhone 4. The same is true for iPad vs iPad 3 and MBP vs rMBP.

All graphical elements and text are the same size. Retina is for clarity, not screen real estate.

Certainly. That's because Apple uses integer multipliers on their screen resolution. Anyway, I think I was just trying to say that 326 ppi is nice, but to me it's not necessary. The SGS2 does just fine. Yes the SGS3 is sharper in text, but I wouldn't call the SGS2 crappy. In fact a SGS1 with Pentile is worse than an SGS2 with its blown up screen. So if Apple went to 4" or 4.3" with the same resolution it might not be "retina," but honestly I don't think that many consumers would mind it. My argument was that of which Android users used to say. Screen size > sharpness when they talked about SGS2 vs iPhone 4/S. I'd rather them have a larger screen than worry about ppi and stick to something too small. At the same time I do believe 4.8" is too large.

I agree with alot of things you said.
I thought the international GS2 is just about perfect.
More square-ish and 4.3".
By the time T-mobile and Sprint got a hold of it, it became rounder and >4.6".
And I'm not a fan of the GS3 at all.

As for Apple, I wish they just kept the 3:2 ratio and made it 4" or 4.3"
They could have just kept it 960x640 and people wouldn't have cared.
I mean the GS2 was at 4.65 and 800x480 and it still sold like crazy.
I think Apple wanted to retain the "retina" crap.
I don't care for the new form factor of the IP5.

I think the bigger screen would be nice, but not enough for me to jump to the 5 only for that improvement. Right now, the 3.5" screen lets me use the entire phone one-handed (full thumb travel); going to a larger screen may mean that I have to use two hands for some functions.

Mostly I'm interested in an improved camera.

If I had a 4/4S, I would upgrade for LTE alone, let alone a bigger screen and any other features.

Seriously, LTE is the single greatest feature to me. So many things I took for granted and then when I went back to a non-LTE device it was like I went back to the stone age.

If you're not tethering is it that noticeable?

Nevermind tethering, I'm talking about doing things on the phone itself. Downloading apps, surfing the web, watching high quality Youtube, downloading/uploading anything, etc.

Network speeds were the major bottleneck of smartphones before LTE.

Depends where you are at. Im in NYC and LTE on my razr is pathetic. So pathetic that I just dont use the phone at all (My job provided it) and have it forward to my personal cell, a tmobile sgs3. The fake 4G on tmobile is 2-3x faster than verizons lte. Probably NYC saturation but lte, for me, is pretty much useless.

That's definitely not the case here. Verizon's LTE is ridiculously fast and I get coverage everywhere in our area.

ATT LTE is good in New York City.

Definitely going to upgrade just for LTE everything else is a bonus for me.

Yeah, my ip4 feels so pathetically slow when browsing compared to my gs3. Even when I drop to HSPA on my gs3 it's noticeably slower than LTE.

Interesting. I bet LTE feels similar to being on fast WIFI network. At home I always switch to WIFI since my home internet is like 5-10 times faster than AT&T HSPA+. But right now I'm enjoying AT&T superior HSPA+ coverage after suffering with T-Mobile poor data coverage for 13 years. I did get about 2x the speed on T-Mobile compared to AT&T when I did get HSPA+ coverage but that can't make up all the times I was on 2g EDGE or worse on T-Mobile. Honestly I don't notice the speed drop on AT&T 3g vs T-Mobile. I do notice the stronger 3g signals I'm getting with AT&T and the way superior coverage and building signal penetration. This is on Straight Talk AT&T.

I'm surprised people care that much about a camera.

LTE would be a huge plus, but I'm not sure what the speeds are like in Chicago. I know that during rush hour ATT 3G is unusable. Even sending sms takes forever.
